I am ... morepleased to offer these C. 1890's individual maps salvaged from a Rand McNally& Co.s Atlas(elephant folio) Each map is copyrighted with a year in the 1890's. All the maps are printed on heavy paper; they are aquatinted and display much more detail than smaller maps. Any relevant faults such as foxing, tears, holes or stains are disclosed if they affect the map area and are visually detracting. You will note that these maps are very larger and at least double the size of most other maps available. Rand McNally published a number of smaller-sized atlases, some with a similar name and same year, so in comparing, pay particular attention to the map size. The larger maps have more detail and additional description. These maps were tipped into the atlas and therefore contain no staple marks. Most of the maps are double-page and therefore have a crease down the center and the tipping strip on the reverse. The crease may be professionally pressed out. But the crease mark will never completely disappear. It should also be expected that the page edges will show some minor wear but the wear will not be noticeable after being matted and framed. These county. State, city& country maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and ... moretheir successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is especially true in the South and West. Finley had originally collaborated with D.H. Vance and J.H. Young in the preparation of the maps. V

The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. He is known to have worked as school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. Johnson got his first taste of the map ... morebusiness and a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D.
