This area is currently known at the Shaw neighborhood(named after Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the commander of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Blake Street in the upper left-hand corner(Area 191) and Pierce Place(Area 206) are now called Swann Street. This area still consists of mostly row houses. The Washington City Orphan Asylum(Area 239) and the Washington Hopsital for Foundlings(Area 207) are no longer in existence today. This map measures approximately 28 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches. Including the border area. Property specific detail. Map is in color. VERY RARE. This map is from the Real Estate Plat-Book of Washington. District of Columbia. Vol. 1. Comprising the entire North-West Section from the Original Plats of Squares& Subdivisions and Additions upon record in the office of the Surveyor of the City of Washington" Constructed under the direction of and published in 1892 by Griffith M. Hopkins, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maps this early and showing this much detail of Washington D.C. are VERY SCARCE. The map has fantastic coloring to it. Lots of color coding to represent various attributes(white/stone building. The elapsed transittime of 28 hours between Washington and Chicago, and 26 hours between Chicago and Dallas, suggests that the Offered Item went by train from Washington to New York, was flown on the Government-operated Overnight Flight from New York to Chicago(with intermediate stops in Bellefonte PA, Bryan OH& Cleveland OH) inaugurated July 1, 1925 by First Flight#176, and was flown on C.A.M. No. 3 from Chicago to Dallas, inaugurated May 12, 1926. Airmail service between Washington DC and New York had been demonstrated by First Flight#101 on May 15, 1918, but was not then regularly scheduled. The Offered Item probably travelled by train the 200 or so miles from Washington to New York for the New York to Chicago overnight flight. It was many years before air mail could be flown

Description: This is an original Colton map produced in 1855 in New York and marked No. 24. I believe it is hand water colored. It is printed on medium stock paper. Joseph Hutchins Colton was born July 5. 1800 and founded an American map-making company in 1831. This map has the uniqueness of 3 pictograms; the Washington Monument. The Capitol Building and the Smithsonian Institution. Colton created railroad maps. Immigrant guides, folding pocket maps, large wall maps and elaborate atlases. His maps were printed using engraved steel plates which produced higher quality prints. These type of maps had decorative borders and were often individually hand water colored. The exact outside measurements of the map are 15 and 3/4" high by 18 and 7/16' wide. Professional custom framing was $797.40. It is triple matted with double framing under ... morethe glass. This sets the map back away from the glass about 3/4" giving a 3-D look. Overall measurements are 28" x 30" Pictures do not do this framed piece of history any justice. Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the ... moremap is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some noticeable shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Clearly visible in the image above. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. Despite its small size. It is filled with towns with both English and Native names, including Jamestown(Iamestowne) ... moreand a key to the types of buildings on the left and pictorial topography. Engraved by Pieter van den Keere with his Latinized name appearing in the title cartouche. Cartogrpher: Jan Jansson or Johannes Janssonius(1588- 1664) was born in Arnhem. Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married into the cartographically prominent Hondius family. Following his marriage he moved to Amsterdam where he worked as a book publisher. It was not until 1616 that Jansson produced his first maps, most of which were heavily influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time. 1920s Road Map Book, North East USA. Evening Star Newspaper, Wash. DC
This book contains maps of New England. Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Virgiinia for use by automobilists of the early 1920s. It is a publication of C.S.Hammond for the Evening Star and Sunday Star newspapers of Washington, DC. While Hammond did not date their maps, the fact that a few of the state roads have route numbers but there are no US Route numbers, says it was published before 1927 or so. The car pictured on the fromt page is definitly early to mid 1920s. The markings that the individual states made on roadside poles to guide motorists are explained where appropriate[not all states numbered their routes or provided other guidance at that time] Booklet measures 10" X 14" and contains 16 pages. Condition is good with slight wear around the edges. Paper covers. Of course.

Please be aware that the Maps I sell are anywhere from 10 to 90 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So some of the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders and fold lines of the maps may also have tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell ... morewill fade away in time. This offering features a large George Cram. Double-page, multi-color map of WASHINGTON, DC. The map was extracted from the George Cram Modern Atlas-the World, published in 1911. The last two photos validate the origin of the map and its publishing date. The back of this map includes two other one-page maps: a very nice multi-colored map of the Eastern Hemisphere and a map of the Eastern United States with distances to various countries in Europe(see photos) This Washington. Years ago wrapped up in an old rag/cloth fragment and was handed down to me to sell, this is a very interesting map. to sell, may have came from the 2nd time were in the area retrieving more human remains or maybe a seeker of parts from the plane from that time period. see the link for the story!
