Hopkins, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maps this early and showing this much detail of Washington D.C. are VERY SCARCE. The map has fantastic coloring to it. Lots of color coding to represent various attributes(white/stone building. Pink/brick building, yellow/frame building, if it looks like an envelope/a stable or shed, and black& white dotted/green house etc. Map in generally good condition(not perfect but pretty nice condition) Some browning and small chips or creases at edges. Map is blank on the reverse side. There is a crease up the middle where it was originally bound. The map has some small tears and chips around the edges. A brown square stain can be found on the top right edge and the top left edge of the map. Caused by the original binding. There are a few pencil marks left by a previous owner. There are some black smudges in the left hand border, as well as some larger stains in Area 188. Please be aware that these Road Maps are anywhere from 10 to 90 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So some of the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders and fold lines of the maps may also have tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty ... moresmell will fade away in time. This offering features an original antique one-page. Highly detailed, multi-color map of the CITY OF WASHINGTON(now Washington, DC) with an equal sized high-quality map including the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware on the back. The maps were rescued from Gaskell's Popular Atlas of the World, published in 1888, and which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the maps and the publishing date. The maps were specially engraved for inclusion in this Gaskell atlas and are contemporary with the publishing date. The City of Washington map has a special feature that locates and names all of the prominent buildings. Churches, theaters, and hotels of the era(see 4th photo) In 1888, Georgetown and other areas were not a part of the City of Washington as we know it today(see 5th photo) ... moreThe District of Columbia, which included the City of Washington in 1888, is shown as an inset on this map(see 3rd photo) Both maps have a page size of 11" wide x 13-3/8" long.
