This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Following the St. Lawrence River Valley from Montreal eastward to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this map covers what is today Montreal, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Canadian provinces and territories were under British and French control from the 16th century, until France gave up its claims in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Canada would remain a collection of British colonies until its confederation in 1867, when the British Province of Canada was divided into Quebec and Ontario and the British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia incorporated as Canadian provinces. With the signing of the 1854 Treaty of Reciprocity between the United States and Canada, this area experienced a period of sustained growth and prosperity. The increased international trade that flowed into Quebec via the Hudson Valley inspired popular interest in the region. Montreal, Three Rivers, and St. Francis in particular benefited from the cross-border trade. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. I believe these were all hand-colored at this time. The map itself measures 25 ½” wide x 17 ½” high. It is on parchment-type paper and is in excellent condition. The only minor defects are a tiny hole at the center of two different folds. And some darkening/foxing in a few areas just from age. Map to Illustrate Capt. Bonneville's Adventures among the Rocky Mountains. Complied by J. H. Colton. No. 86. Cedar Street" for the Putnam edition of Irving's adventures of Bonneville. Map is about 11 by 18 inches. The map is in great shape and the image is strong. There are two miss fold folds not greatly affecting the map and best seen in the reverse side photo. There are three archival tape repairs- two top fold lines and where it was attached to the book(see reverse side photos) There is some slight browning along the edges. There are not other tears, holes or repairs noted. The map covers most of the western US from the Missouri Valley to the Pacific Ocean.
