1856 Colton Map of Delaware. Maryland and Washington D.C. WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Delaware And Maryland. Description: ... moreAn excellent 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Delaware and Maryland. Like most of Colton's state maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. The map covers both Delaware and Maryland as well as parts of the adjacent states. A large inset of the District of Columbia(Washington D.C. appears in the lower left quadrant. The Chesapeake Bay is rendered in full. This map was issued at the height of the American westward expansion. Six years before this map was drawn the California gold discovery of 1849 enticed thousands to embark upon the rigorous transcontinental emigration. Meanwhile, with the rise in territorial population to the west of the Mississippi, the eastern states were becoming increasingly divided over the issues of slavery and state vs. federal sovereignty. Within five years these disputes would lead to the American Civil War. The Chesapeake Bay region was the seat of the Civil War and many of its most important battles took place here. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. Issued as page no. 22 in volume 1 of Colton's 1856 Atlas of the World. Size: Printed area measures 14 inches high by 17 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Blank on verso. Even overall toning. This auction is for the extremely rare and 100% original and authentic antique map of the above region. Cartographer and year. This auction is only for ... morethe map that is pictured in this listing. I cannot stress enough how beautiful this map is up close compared to the photos that you see. Note that the photos do not do the map justice. This is truly an incredible map to behold! This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. Possibly because of the expense of purchasing a two volume atlas set, the sales of the Atlas of the World did not meet Colton's expectations and it was thus that, in 1856, they also issued the Atlas as

This auction is for a vintage original antique map of The United States from 1879. This is a 100% genuine original antique map. Map is hand colored as ... moreissued and is a stunning example of the issue. Cartographer: O.W Gray and Son Year: 1879 Details: Some staining and minor tears at edges. Can be easily repaired with archival tape. Will look great framed. See pictures. General Description: 1. Strikingly interesting and highly detailed map. Hand colored. The map depicts in great detail all of the geographical information known at the time the map was published. Note that many geographical details have changed since the map was published and were not accurate compared to today's modern maps because things were fully discovered and accurately mapped yet. Map symbols and details include individual towns. Rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands, mountains, forests, roads and other important places as shown on the map in this listing. 2. The map is in excellent condition considering the age and rarity of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is approximately 16.5 inches by 26 inches. 3. The map is a 100% original and genuine antique map. Good luck and good bidding. Will be shipped rolled in tube. I suggest when you get map. lay it flat on table for a few hours to regain shape. I don't ship flat due to too much damage.

LARGE ORIGINAL 1857 WISCONSIN MAP FROM COLTON US ATLAS HAND COLORED
Antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements alongside the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed, but most of the atlas remains. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around ... morethe edges, otherwise the map is very clean. There are a few light shadows lettering from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time, barely visible. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. They will all be offered at low opening bids with no reserves. These are all genuine items, not cheesy reproductions or reprints. Please visit our other listings to view them. Free Priority shipping in the United States. Due to their size. These maps will be carefully rolled, wrapped in plastic, and mailed in a tube. We have been shipping books and other items for 17 years, so we have learned to pack carefully and safely. If you plan to purchase more than one of these maps or other items. Please do not pay until you're done bidding. We'd prefer to ship them together. Reminder: the image of the title page below is for informational purposes only- it is NOT included as part of this auction. And please do not ask for photocopies of it since it's just so darn big. Thanks for your interes

LARGE ORIGINAL 1857 DAKOTAH DAKOTA & MINNESOTA MAP COLTON ATLAS HAND COLORED
Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. This map includes Minnesota and Dakotah. Portions of which were later to become parts of North and South Dakota. Condition is very good. ... moreAnd much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. And please do not ask for photocopies of it since
