Size: The map image measures approximately 15 by 24 inches on a 18 by 26 1/2" 46x67cm) page with a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall tonal aging. Printed on a heavy page with original hand color and a centerfold as issued. There are a few handling smudges around the margins and slight half inch splits at the ends of the centerfold, otherwise it is very clean and would frame up well, see the pics for more on condition. There is also some light writing on the back which we have made no attempt to erase. Please note the fold line on the back. It cannot be seen on the front but you can feel it with your fingers. Without Canada and 18 states to go Those British Possessions were not given Dominion status until 1867. Florida and Texas were only a decade old with California a mere five year old. Nebraska Territory ate up a third of the Mid-west and Alaska was Russian America. In South America. Colombia was named New Grenada. Canada wasn’t officially named until 1867 narrowly missing being named Victoriana and Borealia. Though Cartier called it Canada in 1535 extending as far south as Louisiana(chauvinist Frenchman) The purchaser of this history chart may want to sit for a long exploration adventure. This mahogany framed glass enclosed map is intended to be a hanging piece an it measures 19" from handle to handle and 13.5" wide. There is a repair on the lower left corner of the frame and a minor stain in upper Pacific.

Map to Illustrate Capt. Bonneville's Adventures among the Rocky Mountains. Complied by J. H. Colton. No. 86. Cedar Street" for the Putnam edition of Irving's adventures of Bonneville. Map is about 11 by 18 inches. The map is in great shape and the image is strong. There are two miss fold folds not greatly affecting the map and best seen in the reverse side photo. There are three archival tape repairs- two top fold lines and where it was attached to the book(see reverse side photos) There is some slight browning along the edges. There are not other tears, holes or repairs noted. The map covers most of the western US from the Missouri Valley to the Pacific Ocean. Bonneville made in adventures in the 1830s. This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. Possibly because of the expense of purchasing a two volume atlas set, the sales of the Atlas of the World did not meet Colton's expectations and it was thus that, in 1856, they also issued the Atlas as
