The 1864 ... moreissue of the Family Atlas is the first true Johnson and Ward atlas. Johnson maps from the Family Atlas are notable for their unique borders. Of which there are four different designs, the"strapwork borer" from 1860 to 1863, the"fretwork border" from 1863 to 1869 and the"spirograph border" in 1870– 1882, and a more elaborate version of the same from 1880-1887. Johnson maps are known for their size, accuracy, detail, and stunning, vivid hand coloring. Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Id. Description: A beautiful 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Canada's Maritime Provinces. Although known as the'Birthplace of Confederation' Prince Edward Island would only join the confederation in 1873. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. Possibly because of the expense of purchasing a two volume atlas set, the sales of the Atlas of the World did not meet Colton's expectations and it was thus that, in 1856, they also issued the Atlas as

Original 1855 Map of Georgetown and Washington DC by Cartographer J H Colton
Description: This is an original Colton map produced in 1855 in New York and marked No. 24. I believe it is hand water colored. It is printed on medium stock paper. Joseph Hutchins Colton was born July 5. 1800 and founded an American map-making company in 1831. This map has the uniqueness of 3 pictograms; the Washington Monument. The Capitol Building and the Smithsonian Institution. Colton created railroad maps. Immigrant guides, folding pocket maps, large wall maps and elaborate atlases. His maps were printed using engraved steel plates which produced higher quality prints. These type of maps had decorative borders and were often individually hand water colored. The exact outside measurements of the map are 15 and 3/4" high by 18 and 7/16' wide. Professional custom framing was $797.40. It is triple matted with double framing under ... morethe glass. This sets the map back away from the glass about 3/4" giving a 3-D look. Overall measurements are 28" x 30" Pictures do not do this framed piece of history any justice. What a great piece for your office or den! Condition: This antique map is in excellent condition. It has some light spotting on the back with very light yellowing. Some dark yellowing is around the border about 1/2" in from the edge. The border has a couple of small tears(1/4" with small piece of both bottom corners missing. Map is mark-free. ANTIQUE MAP 1855 J.H. COLTON LAKE SUPERIOR UPPER MICHIGAN + N. WISCONSIN
You are bidding on a great original antique map of"Lake Superior and the Northern Part of Michigan. As you can see from the markings on the right. This map was published by J.H. Colton, NY in 1855. The map also includes portions of northern Wisconsin as well as Lake Michigan, including Mackinac Island. The outer dimensions of the page measure approximately 13 7/8" by 17. The back side of the map is entitled"The State of Illinois" and sets forth detailed information about all aspects of that state as of the 1855, including the census data for all of Illinois as of 1850, which was 851,470! I am not a map expert, but it appears to be in nice shape for its age- 159 years old- though it does have some toning, minor soiling, and a few small tears in the outer edge of the paper that do not extend to the map itself. That being ... moresaid. This is still a nicely engraved and hand? colored map, which would look great on the walls of your home or vacation home. At present, the map is encased in, but not affixed to a protective plastic sleeve, though it could easily be removed for framing. I am leaving it in the sleeve for shipping purposes, and thus, will not be rolling it. Please note, I have a great many other antique maps of various European countries and US states for sale, so please check them out if you are interested. Thanks for looking! Posted with
