Description: A beautiful 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Quebec(Canada East or Lower Canada) and New Brunswick. Like most of Colton's regional maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Following the St. Lawrence River Valley from Montreal eastward to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this map covers what is today Montreal, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Canadian provinces and territories were under British and French control from the 16th century, until France gave up its claims in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Canada would remain a collection of British colonies until its confederation in 1867, ... morewhen the British Province of Canada was divided into Quebec and Ontario and the British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia incorporated as Canadian provinces. With the signing of the 1854 Treaty of Reciprocity between the United States and Canada, this area experienced a period of sustained growth and prosperity. The increased international trade that flowed into Quebec via the Hudson Valley inspired popular interest in the region. Montreal, Three Rivers, and St. Francis in particular benefited from the cross-border trade. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. 1897 Colton Chromolithograph Map View of New York City: Manhattan Brooklyn Quee
1897 Colton Chromolithograph Map View of New York City: Manhattan Brooklyn Queens WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: City of New York. Description: An extraordinary unique find. This is G. W. and C. B. Colton’s magnificent 1897 panoramic birds-eye view of New York City. Presented in chromolithograph color this map reveals Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens as seen from high above Jersey City and Hoboken, which themselves appear in the lower left quadrant. The area covered runs from the Bronx to the Statue of Liberty and from Hoboken to Brooklyn and Governor’s Island. The map is presented as if looking west from high above Hoboken and Jersey City– an unusual take on the city which deviates considerably from the more common south-north Manhattan views by earlier publishers such as Currier and Ives, and others. This might ... morebe explained by the development of Upper Manhattan, most notably the Upper West Side and Central Park, late in second half of the 19th century. The artist would have wanted to represent these newly affluent areas so that his view would appeal to the widest possible audience. Several bridges are noted including the Brooklyn Bridge(completed in 1883) the Williamsburg Bridge(opened in 1903 but under construction as this view was being drawn) the Queensboro Bridge(proposed but, as this map was being drawn, as not as yet under construction) and a curious bridge that never materialized crossing the Hudson to Hoboken at 59th Street. Central Park is clearly visible, as are the Statue of Liberty in the lower right quadrant, St. John the Divine in the upper left, and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park in the upper right. New York’s signature grid system is clearly represented as are many individual buildings, many of which still stand today. The rivers, and harbor are teaming with life as countless ships of all shapes and sizes visit the many wharves on both size of the River. Smoke escapes many chimneys throughout, though especially in lower Manhattan and Jersey City, giving evidence t

1856 Colton Map of Turkey Iraq and Syria WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Turkey in Asia and the Caucasian Provinces of Russia. Description: An excellent 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Turkey in Asia and the Caucuses. Like most of Colton's Asia maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Covers from the Crimea south to the Nile Delta, west as far as the Aegean, and east to the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf. The map covers the mid-19th century Asian claims of the Ottoman Empire, including the modern nations of Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Jordan, Israel or Palestine, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, as well as parts of adjacent Iran, Greece, Egypt and Ukraine. The map made during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, whose ... moreinfluence, though rapidly declining, still dominated much of the Middle East. As this map was drawn this region was in the midst of the Crimean War, a conflict between the allied forces of the British, French and Ottoman Empires against the Russian Empire. One of the lesser known, but significant achievements of the Crimean War was laying of an underwater telegraph cable between Varna in European Turkey to Balaklava in Crimea. This 300 mile cable, the longest at the time, enabled almost instant communication between the British and French forces. This map identifies the telegraph and marks the date of first message from Balaklava, 1855. The map also identifies various cities, towns, rivers, rapids, mountain passes, and an assortment of additional topographical details. The 1854 Battle of Balaclava, fought during the Crimean War, is noted. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define national and regional boundaries.
