Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches on a 14 1/4 by 17" page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. And many subsequent issues were produced, the main differences being the depictions of the evolving railroad infrastructure. CONDITION: Very Good or better. A few small brown age spots(in the Lake Erie portion and at the right base of the engraving) A few tiny perforations at the interstices of the folds, and a few very small edge splits, but overall this is a very well preserved map without the usual serious issues at the folds. The paper is overall crisp and bright, and the map would display very well. The folder is nicely preserved too, with just a few nicks to the edges, and fraying to the paper endpapers at the fold but the publisher's ad is nicely preserved inside. Please see the photos. When unfolded the map measures 17” by 26” approximately. It is dated 1884 When folded up. The small book is 3 ¾” by 5 ¾” The map appears to be hand tinted to me. The map is a bit brittle. There are small splits at the cross folds. One corner was dog-eared and along one side the paper was mis-folded. The map is clean and unmarked. The binding is pretty nice. The spine is rubbed through in one small spot and in one ¾” long spot. Inside. The hinge is split. Please look carefully at the photos and ask questions. I am not a“Map” person. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single elephant size folio sheet as shown in the main pic. Overall, a beautiful rare map with nice color that would frame up nicely. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches(32x39cm) on a 15 1/2 by 18 1/2" 37x44cm) page with a margin all around for framing ... moreas seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Good condition with overall light tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. There are a couple of light spots in the margin and some light browning in the Pacific as seen. Although lighter on the actul map, otherwise it is very clean with strong color that would frame up well, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map. No. 172 William St. 13-5/8 x 16" engraved and fully hand-colored(by county) map tipped inside the back board of a 32mo(3.5 x 5" hard folder covered in blind-stamped greenish-black cloth with gilt-stamped titles. Published's ad tipped inside the front board as an endpaper. Titled"Colton's Map of Virginia" on the front board. Original copyright date of 1851 printed above the scale of miles. And map presumably updated to the stated date of 1864. Handsome map with an ornate Celtic knot-inspired border. Full-color. Depicts portions of surrounding states and waters. Insets of"Richmond. Henrico County- Manchester and Springhill, Chesterfield Co. and"Norfolk, Portsmouth and Gosport" ... moreLongitude W from Washington. D. C. key to railroads, common roads, canals, county towns, and village POs and depots; topography(mountains) West Virginia is labeled separately but not named separately in the title. Even though it was officially admitted to the Union June 20. 1863, the Confederacy and the Rebel faction of the legislature in Virginia still contested this. CONDITION: Fair to Good map in Very Good folder. The folder has slight edge wear. And the pastedown with the publisher's ad is split at the inner fold, as is usually seen. The map has several splits but no paper loss: two 2" splits at the right margin, one 4" split at the bottom just left of center, one small split at the bottom right margin. In addition, there are a few small splits at the interstices of the folds. The split at the bottom left has one small length slightly off-fold with a 1/8" flap(still present) Very mild uniform age-yellowing and a few brown spots. This map would display well with minor conservation to stabilize the splits. Scarce"miniature" format map from the"Octavo" atlas. This small octavo format Colton atlas appeared for only 2 years. 1864& 1865 and individual map sheets from it are quite uncommon on the market. This small map is a reduced version of their folio format map of the same title and has been apparently entirely newly engraved. Nicely detailed. Full original hand color. At top right is an inset of Hawaii(Sandwich Islands) with a long comparative Mountain profile across the bottom. Scarce variant map which is not noted in Tooley's monumental work on the mapping of Australia. In Good+ mostly clean condition. Map displaying ... moresome light scattered spotting and soiling. As seen. Otherwise map remains clean and quite well-preserved overall. Sheet measures c. 11 3/4" W x 9 3/8" H. Printed area measures c. 10 1/4" W x 7" H. Original fold line as issued. R526. Tooley.
