You are bidding on: Rare 1905 Map Of The SAN JUAN TRIANGLE Ouray- Telluride- Silverton ~ The Clason Map Company ~ This exceptionally rare pocket sized folding map extends to approximately 36 x 40.5" From the sources I was able to find online, this is toted as being a quite rare map of the areas of Ouray. Telluride, Silverton in Colorado ~which lists the extensive mines and claims within the areas. Not sure if they're all gold mines and claims ~ or other precious metals like silver ~ and/or minerals like coal being documented as well. The folded map still retains ... moreits front and back covers, but the front cover is seperated from the back and is loose. The inner map was used in the field and shows wear. Tear, and repair. The map is in two layers.the frontside with the printing/ and the backside which is a waterproof layer ~ specifically designed this way to keep the map safe in the field and in possibly wet environments. The map is primarily clean. Staining or darkening has obviously occurred in places where tape was used to reinforce tears. Nevertheless. Description: A fine example of the scarce 2nd edition of Johnson’s map of the southwestern United States printed in 1861. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to include most of Colorado. In the second edition of this map Johnson made significant changes. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. The Colorado Gold Region, which had been discovered only a ... morefew years previous in 1858, is clearly labeled as are all three Parks. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The outbreak of the Civil War and the wealth of silver under Virginia City(here identified as‘Mormon Settlement’ hastened the conferment of territorial status on Nevada. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California’s border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. In New Mexico and Arizona Johnson has removed the latitudinal border between New Mexico and Arizona that he included in the 1860 edition of his atlas. This was most likely in response to Arizona’s petition for territorial status independent of New Mexico being denied by the U.S. Congress. With o

Succeeding where the mountain men had all failed, and by means of his map. Stansbury had painted at least one more bold stroke into the unfinished portrait of the national landscape. William Goetzmann This monumental map details Stansbury's seminal 1852 trek from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to the Great Salt Lake region of Utah. It is considered to be the first accurate survey of the Great Basin and the southern Rocky Mountains, as well as a cornerstone achievement in the mapping of ... morethe American West. The first westerner to visit the Great Basin was most likely Silvestre Vélez de Escalante in the 1776, however, Escalante, who visited Utah Lake to the south, never truly laid eyes on Great Salt Lake. The first scientific expedition to this area was headed up by Fremont in 1843. Daunted by the season and climate, Fremont never circumnavigated the lake. A laser-printed facsimile of the copyright information as it appears in the atlas from which this original map was removed will be included. On a peel-off. Self-adhesive sheet. In this example Nebraska is drawn with a long panhandle extending from Iowa all the way to Fremont’s Peak.
