It was published by the US Coastal Survey Office for House of Representative as Ex. Doc. No. 26. 32d Congress, 2d Session Sketches Acompanying Report of Coast Survey. 1851. A copy of the Index page with the date and publishing details is included for authenticity. It has a date of 1851 printed on the map. It is being sold as a single sheet not matted nor framed. As seen in the main pic. A large mapfocused on New Jersey and New York City area including Staten Island, Delaware River, Philadelphia and other places. Interesingly Sandy Hook is shown ... moreas an island at this time. Nice accurate detail of the coast line for the period. Size: The image area measures 19 by 23 inches on a 20 by 24" page as seen in the main pic. Condition: It is in Fair to Good condition for its age. Especially for a folding map. It is blank on the reverse with multiple folds as issued, basically as seen in the pics. The main horizontal fold has basically split and has been professionally repaired on the reverse with archival Japanese paper, hardly noticeable. There is some double creasing along the fold and slight wear with a couple of nicks and short tears on the edges. Otherwise it is very clean on still very pliable paper. Including the location of a shipwreck in the South Slough, east of Guano Rock. Other named places and features include Cape Gregory, Pigeon Point, Fearless Rock, and Point Yoakum. The scans below show some of the detail, as well as the map opened up: This map was published by the U.S. Coast Survey. Under the direction of A.D. Bache, Superintendent. The image area measures 14-3/4" x 17-1/2" and the map is drawn on a scale of 1:20,000. The triangulation topography and hydrography are by James S. Lawson. Submitting A Report in Reply to a Resolution of the Senate of December 27, 1848, Relating to the Expenditures and Results of the United States Coast Survey. A comprehensive 111-page document. Removed from a larger bound volume of government documents long ago(not by me. Today called the Coast and Geodetic Survey, the Coast Survey was begun in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson and is the U.S. governments oldest scientific organization. Louis Agassiz, James Whistler, and John Muir were all, at one time, employed by the Survey, which has as its mission the intricate mapping of the coastal terrain of the nation, so as to assure the safe passage of shipping and naval vessels.
