The coverage area extends from the eastern portion of Cedar Keys to Cormorant Rock in the Gulf of Mexico. Including the Florida coast and offshore waters. The map gives soundings, bottom conditions, tidal information, and sailing directions for approaching mariners. The map is drawn on a scale of 1:50.000, and the image area measures 46 x 45.5 cm[18" x 17-3/4" Among the specific named places and features are Depot Key, West Oyster Reef, Grassy Point, Dog Island, Vahina Reef, and Snake Key. The map also locates a post road and old fort. The scans below give a closer look: The map was published by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1856. This rare and unique map is being offered by the family of its original owner. It is a large map. Measuring approximately 33" X 42" It is a U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Map, Number 1213, and the original cost is given as $1.00. It is titled, LONG ISLAND SOUND WESTERN PART" It is marked as the 11th edition, dated March 17, 1947, Revised 6/11/57. There is also a"stamp" on the bottom border stating, Corrected Through Notice to Mariners No. 1 Jan. 4'58 C& G D New York 7, N. Y. The map is complete. However it does have some edge wear and very small(tack? holes on corners. Please view the pictures to understand this. Also, as it has been"rolled up" for decades, the REAR/BACK of the map shows discoloration on its outer roll, where it was not inside the rolling. It would also be mailed in a tube, so as ... moreto avoid folding and loss of integrity. For its 50+ years of age, it is, however, remarkable that it has maintained such complete and good condition. The map displays the western part of the Long Island Sound. These surveys"provide notes on important characteristics including depth readings and names of harbors. Rivers and coastal towns. and illustrate"significant changes due to modifications and recessions of coastal lands, making them fascinating to anyone interested in local geography and history. as well as those with strong interests in maritime navigation and history.
