This is an Antique Original Framed US Coast Survey Chart"West Coast Umpquah River to Boundary" 1851, Revised 1864. The coastal area shown includes Washington and Oregon. In 1851. Both were territories. By the revision date of 1864, Oregon was a state, but Washington was not. This large chart is in a 25" x 28" brown wood frame with black trim. The viewable area of the chart is about 23" x 26" Closeup photos show some of the annotation details and portions of the beautiful artwork. The chart has a paper dust cover and a picture wire ready for hanging as seen. At the time of the original listing. This was one of two antique original US Coast Survey framed charts/ maps being list, one framed and the other unframed, purchased together from the same estate. Condition As found. You can see that the paper has some rippling. ... moreI assume that may indicate that the chart was not dry mounted but I do not know for sure. I do not know the prospects for reframing to correct this problem. The paper color seems to be pretty uniform, and I do not see any additional issues such as stains, tears, or creases. The frame and glass are in very good condition with exception of a few minor scrapes and scratches on the finish such as those seen in the closeup of the lower right corner. This sheet is in its original monochrome and was the first map of San Francisco made by Americans. I believe this has been professionally restored. Has been backed with archival material to provide strength. Possibly cleaned as the paper color is white with no spotting or toning. 1881 Sussex Coast Ordnance Survey Map Old Antique Slipcase Long 150cms! Brighton
An exceptional 1 inch to 1 mile Ordnance Survey map dated 1880/1881. Showing the whole of the Sussex coast from Selsey Bill in the West to Pevensey Bay in the East. The map extends north to Midhurst, Petworth, Burgess Hill and Heathfield. It is therefore a long item- some 150cms- but only 64.5cms wide. It folds into its original slipcase which is 22cms x 13cms. The slipcase bears a Stanford label(55 Charing Cross) and the map still slips in and out of the case easily. So a rare item(most unusual to show the whole of the Sussex coast) in its original state with slipcase. Such a long map is actually formed of 2 editions. One taken"from an electrotype in 1880" and the other"from an electrotype taken in 1881" Both maps were published under the directorship of Colonel AC Cooke. The engravers have been mentioned by name: The ... moreoutline by W Newman, the writing by J Darling, the ornament by CF Fuidge" all under the direction of Captain Beamish. The other side of the map names J Racine for the outline, J Grandison for the writing, and CF Fuidge for the water. Overall direction was with Captain Burke. Condition: Generally in good condition with no tears etc. to the folds. Linen- backed. The linen in good condition. One or two small marks to the map, mainly at the edges. Browning in places, especially top right. Slipcase showing some signs of wear, bumped at the corners and marked but still fully operational. Overall the whole thing in good condition I would say. Original 1811 Coast Survey Map SUMATRA Mentawai Islands Bengkulu Padang Sunda Handsome original antique map of southwestern Sumatra. Published more than 200 years ago. The map is titled Partie de l'Isle Sumatra. Ou se trouve l'Etablissement Anglais de la Baye de Sellabar, pres Bencoule. The image area measures a generous 42.9 x 38.7 cm[17" x 15¼" and was engraved by Ambrose Tardieu. The map was drawn by Charles François Tombe and printed in his Voyage aux Indes Orientales, Chez Arthus Bertand. Paris, 1811. There is a latitude scale at the right margin, a large compass rose, and a decorative swash title. The coverage area extends from the site of present-day Padang to the Sunda Strait. Including a tiny tip of Java and the southern end of the Mentawai Islands, the last of which is here labeled Isle Nassau, likely ... morenamed by John Crisp, a civilian employee in the service of the English East India Company who visited South Pagai(Poggy Island" 20 years before this map was printed. The map labels the English settlement at Fort Marlborough on the Bay of Sellabar. Near Bencoule(present-day Bengkulu) and it locates numerous coastal features and small islands. Condition: It is in very good condition. Sound and clean, with folds, as issued, and no rips or tears. It is trimmed to the neat line at the left and is blank on the back. With no printing on the reverse side. There's some faint toning in the right margin, outside the image area.
