This is a n antique map of San Francisco and the Peninsula made in 1869. I believe this is original because there is nothing to indicate that it is a reprint. It is in black and white. Measures 21" by 31 1/2" and is in excellent condition on sturdy paper. It is a US Coast Survey map and apparently predates Golden Gate Park or any houses in the entire western 1/2 of the city. This is 20 years after the start of the Gold Rush so San Francisco has already become a city by then. Check out my other items! SHIPPING: This weighs over a pound when packed for shipping. This is a large map on heavier poster paper from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. It's from the northern Puget Sound area in Washington state showing the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Georgia Strait. It's about 35 X 43 inches in size and has been rolled up for decades so it's going to take some effort or time for it to flatten out. It's from 1939 but has a 1941 stamp on it. This will be more clear than the digital photo shows. The high bidder is to pay for shipping. This map was produced by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1854 from its survey in Section 9 of the Galveston Bay area done between 1848 and 1852. The map. Without margins, measures 7 1/2" x 11, and is framed in a walnut frame with outer measurements of 9 3/8" x 13. There is a faint old vertical crease, as it was originally bound, but the map is generally quite clean, and nicely detailed, showing Galveston Bay, the East Bay, West Bay, Oyster Bay, and as far West as Matagorda Bay. The easternmost point is Turtle Bay at the end of Galveston Bay. I apologize for the fuzzy scans but I don't want to take the map out of the frame to get it closer to the scanner, so much is lost in the translation, but it does appear crisp at close viewing. Background: The Coast and Geodetic Survey effort started back as early 1826 to help chart and map shore lines. Rocks, sands, islands and reefs, as well as the tides and currents, in order to steer a safe course for navigators. Much special equipment was designed and many scientific instruments were perfected for use in the surveys. This wire drag was one of the most interesting of these devices. This drag consisted of a wire cable suspended in the water at a depth considered safe for all vessels. Original 1867 Coast Survey Map ST CATHERINES ISLAND OSSABAW Georgia Medway River Original antique lithographed large-format fold-out coastal survey map of St. Catherine's Sound. Printed more than 147 years ago. The image area measures a generous 55.9 x 73.6 cm[22" x 29" And the coverage area includes the northern part of St. Catherine's Island and the southern part of Ossabaw Island. This chart is drawn on a scale of 1:40.000 and was published by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1867. It shows soundings, bottom conditions, tidal statistics, and navigational aids. Named places and features include the North Newport River. Experiment Shoal, Cedar Creek, Medway River, Concord Shoal, Walburg Creek, and Bear River. This is a coastal survey chart. So there is only minimal detail on land features, but it does show wagon roads and a few ... morescattered buildings on St. Catherine's Island. This island had been awarded to freed slaves after the Civil War by General Sherman, but the year this map was printed, Sherman's order was challenged, and the island reverted to its previous owner. The former slaves were forced to relocate to White Bluff, on the Georgia mainland. Condition: This map is printed on a lightweight paper. Like many government fold-out maps of the mid-19th century, and the paper has turned slighly brittle. You will want to handle it carefully, as you would any old document. There is some faint toning on one fold, and a couple of the folds have been reinforced on the reverse side with archival tape. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. The coverage area extends from Hunters Point(labeled Point Avisadera) in the southeast part of San Francisco to Redwood City and Alviso. In San Jose. The map locates numerous landings, creeks, and sloughs, as well as a large area labeled"Shell Banks" between San Mateo and San Bruno. This is primarily a nautical chart with minimal inland detail. But it does show wagon roads and scattered buildings. RARE US Coast & Geodetic Survey Map 1963 NY-Conn. Oyster Bay Quadrangle -17"x21"
This rare and unique map is being offered by the family of its original owner. It is a map. Measuring approximately 17" X 21" It is a U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Map, Numbered N4045-W7330/15. It is titled, NEW YORK-CONNECTICUT OYSTER BAY QUADRANGLE" It is marked as"Surveyed in 1897" and is also stated in small print, Interior-Geological Survey Washington D.C.1963" Its northern most display is Greenwich/Stamford, and southern most is Hempstead. The east is Northport/Oyster Bay, and the west is Larchmont and Great Neck. The map is complete and in very good condition. And I can find no signs of writing, tears, or holes of any sort. Please view the pictures to understand this. Also, as it has been"rolled up" for decades, thus there are"roll creases" which would flatten out with framing and ... moredisplaying of the piece. Also, the REAR/BACK of the map shows a very limited number of tiny spots, likely a result of age storage, strictly on the back/rear side of the map, not effecting the integrity of the map's display. This piece would be mailed in a tube, so as to avoid folded edges, and loss of integrity. For its 50+ years of age, it is remarkable that it has maintained its complete and very good condition. The map displays the Greenwich(Captain Harbor) Long Island Sound. Oyster Bay Harbor, Hempstead Harbor, Manhasset Bay, and much more. These surveys are of great interest and are fascinating to anyone interested in local geography and maritime navigation and history. I am not a collector. There's an elevated view at the lower left and printed sailing directions for approaching mariners. Cape Flattery is the furthest northwest point in the contiguous United States. Other named places and features on the map are Neah Village. Astronomical Station, Tatoosh Island, Clesseet's Village, Duncan's Rock, Waddah Island, the waterfall west of Chibahdehl Rocks, and more.
