This is a 1984 U.S. Postal Service Map of Charleston. South Carolina. The map indicates(19) post office locations from the years 1694-1896. It also indicates historic postal events from 1690-1897. The piece has a(2) tone solid ornate wood frame. The frame has just 1-2 minor nicks which can be repaired with a colored wood pencil from your local Home Depot or Lowes. The measurements of this piece framed are 17 3/4 x 21 1/2. The piece has the hanging hardware already installed. and vey well done) The Map is In Mint condition. What a nice piece this is.

Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. Colton, was an important American map and atlas ... morepublisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. In 1842. Herbert Ingram, a young printer and newsagent from Nottingham, arrived in London. As a newsagent he noticed that when on the rare occasions that newspapers included woodcuts, their sales increased. He therefore came to the conclusion that it would be possible to make a good profit from a magazine that included a large number of illustrations. Herbert ... moreIngram discussed the proposal with his friend. Mark Lemon, the editor of Punch magazine. With Lemon as his chief adviser, the first edition of the Illustrated London News appeared on 14th May 1842. Costing sixpence, the magazine had sixteen pages and thirty-two woodcuts. The first edition included pictures of the war in Afghanistan, a train crash in France, a steamboat explosion in Canada and a fancy dress ball at Buckingham Palace. Ingram was a staunch Liberal who favored social reform. He announced in the London Illustrated News that the concern of the magazine would be"with the English poor" and the"three essential elements of discussion with us will be the poor laws. The factory laws, and the working of the mining system" Later Herbert Ingram was to become MP for Boston and until his death in 1860 continued his campaign for social reform in the House of Commons. Printed barely half a year after the start of the Civil War. The map is a single sheet. Measuring 9 x 12 inches in size. It is in Fine condition. The map itself is a small one. Occupying only a portion of the page, in its upper right corner. The map image is 4.5x4.5 inches in size. Drawn on a scale of about 15 miles to the inch. It depicts the Carolina coast. Charleston and Walterboro are close to the top of the map and Dafuskie Island and Tybee Sound( Entrance to Savannah. Geo. is at the bottom. Among the points of interest featured on the map are“Hilton H. Edisto I. St. Helena I. and Hunting Island. Beaufort.
