Secessionville, and vicinity, printed more than 149 years ago. This map shows roads and railroads. And it locates forts, batteries, inlets, and ship channels. Named places and features include James Island. The Charleston& Savannah Railroad, Fort Sumter, Castle Pinckney, Stono Inlet, Mount Pleasant, Fort Moultrie, Cooper River, Folly Island, the South Carolina& Northeastern Railroad, Lawford Channel, Fort Johnston, Beauregard, and more. The image area measures 19 x 13 cm[7-1/2" x 5-1/8" There's a mileage scale at the lower left. And the engraver's name is at the lower right: Waters& Son. This firm was located at 90 Fulton Street, New York and executed a wide range of woodcut ... moreengravings for books, magazines, and newspapers during the mid to late nineteenth century. The city of Charleston and its surrounding fortifications were repeatedly targeted by the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War. But did not fall to Federal forces until the last months of the conflict. The area depicted was also the site of the first successful submarine attack in history, when the H.L. Hunley sank the Union blockade sloop USS Housatonic on February 17. 1864. This map was published in Lloyd's Battle History of the Great Rebellion, H.H. Lloyd& Company, 21 John Street, New York 1865. It is an original. Authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint. And it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. Condition: This map is in very good condition. With some faint offsetting from a facing page, and no marks or writing. There's a small scuff. With some minor paper loss, at the lower right. This auction is for a soil map of: Upshur County West Virginia Each map is roughly 3’ x 4’ or more depending on the size of the county represented. The maps are dated between the years 1904- 1905. Each map was designed to be folded to about 5” x 9” and stored in a box of other maps. This comes from a lot of soil maps retired by the University of Minnesota. Each map is in decent shape and any defects are attempted to be noted by the photo. If you have any questions. Please ask. Some maps do have small tears resulting in a“star shape” between the creases of the folding, but this does not mean any paper or information is lost. Each side of the page has fascinating prints. On one side is a print by Thomas Nast titled: A Group Of Butternut Prisoners, Taken From Life. More common from mid-1862 on was the homespun'butternut' uniform. It took its name from a community of pro-Southern farmers living in the mid-western states, who dyed their garments in walnut or butternut oil. The crudely-made but durable'butternut' uniform was cheaply manufactured across the South by sympathetic civilians, and came to represent the face, in practice if not ideal, of the Confederate soldier up to the end of the War. On the other side of the page is a full page map of Charleston. They are a fascinating historical artifact of the popular engraving process employed by newspapers at the time of the Civil War? During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. There is no date. But looks like circa 1930s or early 1940s. Titled Charleston The Capital of the Coastal Empire of South Carolina"America's Most Historic City" Where Winter is like Spring and Springtime is Azalea Time. This map measures 4 x 9 and folds out to approx 16 inches. The inside features historic charleston sites, such as chapels, old exchange building, naval district yards, world famed gardens: magnolia, cypress, middleton; sports such as golf on the summerville country club, yeamans hall, the annual charleston horse show, carolina yact club; beaches folly, isle of palms, sullivans island, and more. Showing The Approaches By Land And Water, The Rebel Batteries And Lines Of Fire, Roads, Inlets, Principal Plantations, Etc. Compiled From Various Sources. The map was published in a Civil War era Harper's Weekly. March 28, 1863 and measures 9" x 13.5" and is in very good condition with 1/4" margins. During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. This would then be inked and stamped onto the newsprint. The lines on the image above are a result of where the blocks of wood were joined together. Will my antique print deteriorate? Before 1870. Newspapers were not made from wood pulp as they are today. Instead, they were printed on a sturdy paper made by pulping linen rags. These rags came from clothing and ship sails. Because this kind of paper contains very little acid, your antique print could easily retain its appearance for many years into the future, if handled properly.
