Up for bid is this rare Walker's Vest Pocket Map of Boston. Published by Walker Lithograph Co in Boston circa 1910. Giving All points of Interest with every Railway and Steamboat Terminus(including White Star Line, who was the owner of the Titanic) Map is in fairly good condition for it's age but did suffer some water damage which caused the orange jacket to bleed onto the map. Map is heavily creased from being folded for 100 years but does not have any tearing along the crease lines. The best way to explain the condition of the jacket is to examine the pictures. After doing some extensive research, it appears that this is only the third copy known to exist, according to OCLC and ABAA. Shipping is"FREE" and will ship by USPS First Class Mail. This map of Boston is copyrighted 1909. It is from the 1910 Rand McNally Enlarged Business Atlas. It measures 28 X 20 inches. Would look fantastic framed under glass. Shadows seen are my scanner. Not the map. According to worldcat.org. No 1910 McNally Enlarged Business Atlas is known to still exist. A few soft bound folio's from 1910 are in the major reference collections, but it is not clear which maps are included in that edition. The maps I have for sale are quite dear, fantastic to behold, and a very smart investment opportunity especially when buying at our low price. This is Geo. W. Eldridge’s book of Harbor Charts New York to Boston from 1901. Book includes 55 different charts and measures approximately 16 X 21 inches. A complete. Bound set of Eldridge’s popular harbor charts depicting the Atlantic coast from New York City to Boston Harbor in great detail. Rarely seen together in the atlas, the charts were also sold separately, and a price of either 30 cents or 40 cents appears in the top left of each chart. Walker(January 4. 1852- 19? was a Boston based publisher of books, views, and maps active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Walker started his life as a dry goods merchant but developed an active interest in publishing during the early 1870s. Walker began publishing in 1878 when he partnered with an unknown New York Firm. Two years later, Walker brought the operation in house by partnering with his brother, Oscar W. Walker, in the opening of a lithography studio at 81 Milk Street, Boston. Shortly thereafter the firm expanded to new offices at 160 Tremont Street, Boston. The Walker brothers produced a large corpus of works, most of which focused on travel and tourism in New England. Walker also established the Walker-Gordon Milk Laboratory. This interesting investment was based on the premise that infant deaths could be avoided by providing higher quality milk. The company eventually became a great success, producing a high quality cow milk that closely resembled human breast milk. In the process the Walker-Gordon laboratory developed many of the dairy health standards that are still with us today.

This enormous production is one of the large and most detailed maps of Boston to appear in the 19th century. Centered on Boston proper, Walling's map covers from Lexington to Quincy and from Newton to North Chelsea. The map identifies streets, offers footprints of important buildings, the names of significant householders, and notes public buildings, rail lines, various businesses and utilities, shipping routes, parks, and topography, as well as nautical details in Boston Harbor. Many of the buildings of Harvard College are specifically identified. ... moreThe Back Bay Reclamation project, which had been planned form about 1855 on, was still in progress when Walling issued this map. In fact, work had begun only two years earlier in 1857. The project itself was not completed until 1882, however Walling here overlays the existing marshland with ghosted streets and parks. Acting in his official capacity as Head of the State Survey, Walling's production of this map is the result, as the map itself states, of'actual surveys' commissioned and supervised by Walling himself. Facing fierce competition from other publishers that merely copied and amended earlier maps, Walling was committed to producing a first rate modern map of both commercial and governmental viability. Walling's Boston and its Vicinity was first issued in 1857 in a slightly smaller format, with a subsequent minimally updated in a more common edition in appearing 1858. For your consideration a rare birds eye view map of Boston& Environs by George H. Walker Company. Copyright 1905 Boston Massachusetts. An early colored lithograph on paper framed under glass. Not removed from the frame. There are ripples through the map and some minor distortion to the border at the top. Also a mild water stain on the left edge of the border about an 1" at the widest by 16" long running vertically. The map has faded some but is still within collectable status. The image measures 19-1/8 x 27-11/16 inches. The glass size in the front is 21-3/4 x 29-5/8. The frame measures 23-1/4 x 31-3/16 inches. Weight in the frame 7.1 pounds. The image appears to be clean without rips punctures or stains. The variation in color at the bottom of some of the photos included are not in the map but are glare from the glass from ... morethat the camera picked up. This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. RARE 1890 Iliff's Imperial Atlas World Map South America & Cuba & City of Boston
This is for the map you see in the pictures. This is a big map at 21 x 14-1/2 inches from edge to edge. The map is in great condition with no rips or marks in the map part and just slight toning to the page. This is a double or triple sided map and will include the Countries in the title. Some of the map pages are made together as they have a 2 page map on the inside and a single one on the back of each side of that. You will have to look carefully at the pictures as that is the maps you will get. I have a lot of other maps on from this atlas and will combine shipping. This atlas was already divided into the maps before I bought it so this is how you will get the maps. This is a very hard to find book and not a common atlas. Here is an interesting Commemorative/Historical map memorializing Boston's Tercentenary. 1930. It features the olde city of Boston in 1630: Boton Commons; the first steet grid; Mill Pond; Beacon Hill; and. Other famous Boston sites and neighborhoods. The map has a nostalgic. Whimsical look to it. Including the colors of tan. Blue, brownish red, and orange. It also has a humorous slant to it. Especially in its border illustrations. The wording on the map is written to recall the 17th Century English. The map is the obverse side of a brochure that on the reverse side shows the many flags associated with the early United States around the time of the Revolution. The map is 18 1/2" x 12 1/4" opened up. It is folded. As originally, in half to resemble a book. The map's designer/illustrator is Raymond Luskin.
