For your consideration is this great antique map. In not so great shape. Colton's Map of the World on Mercators' Projections published in 1854. The map is about 49" wide, It is around 36" long( I did not measure when I had the map open so this is an educated guess and may be off several inches, due to the condition of the map I do not intend to open it again. Here is a Scarce and Early ORIGINAL 1832 WALL"MAP OF FRAMINGHAM" MASSACHUSETTS"FROM ACTUAL SURVEYS TAKEN BY JONAS CLAYES& WARREN NIXON IN THE YEARS 1830 AND 1831. DRAWN BY WARREN NIXON. 1832. PENDLETON LITHOG. BOSTON" Linen-Backed Map is approx. 25-1/2" x 22" Framed in a handsome antique c.Turn-of-the-Century carved oak frame with original old glass. With the frame. It is 28-1/2" x 24-3/4" Map is from Ex.Collection of the Framingham Historical and Natural History Society with original 1891 Society donation tag attached to the front of the map. Map was donated by a Mrs. Weller to Society in Aug. 1891. Map has some condition issues as you see it. The old varnish has darkened map considerably. There are spot losses to the map ... moremostly at the bottom left side. A number of other crease and wrinkle lines in map. Several dark stain spots in upper middle of map. Very interesting piece of Framingham. MA history with early and outdated names and spellings of locations, houses and buildings all identified such as the"Blacksmith's Shop" on Great Road. Antique Wall Map 1833 West Coast of Sumatra Trade Map Naval History
For your consideration is this incredible. One of a kind large map of the West Coast of Sumatra. The history surrounding this map is just astounding to me. It was produced from 1833-47. This one is dated 1833, with hand notations dated 1835. It was taken from sketches by C.M. Endicott, who Captained a ship in the pepper trade before holding several important titles and later writing a few books. The following is a Wiki excerpt: The island of Sumatra is renowned as an excellent source of pepper. And throughout history ships have come to the island to trade for it. In 1831, the American merchantman Friendship under Captain Charles Endicott had arrived off the chiefdom of Kuala Batee in order to secure a cargo of pepper. Various small trading boats darted back and forth along the coast trading pepper with the merchant ships waiting offshore. ... moreOn February 7. 1831, Endicott and a few of his men went ashore to purchase some pepper from the natives when three proas attacked his ship. Murdered the Friendship' s first officer and two other of her crew. And plundered its cargo. Endicott and the other surviving members of his crew managed to escape to another port with the assistance of a friendly native chief named Po Adam. There they enlisted the help of three other merchant captains who agreed to help him recover his vessel. With their help. Endicott managed to retake his ship and eventually sailed back to Salem. Upon reaching Salem there was a general public outcry against the massacre and in response President Andrew Jackson dispatched the frigate USS Potomac under Commodore John Downes to punish the natives for their treachery. The map itself has several condition issues. Including the tears, missing pieces and mostly the toning and discoloration. To me the beauty is in the details, history and handwritten notations. Fully operational retro wall clock with funky steel map of Cornwall. England. This clock is from the 1940s and was purchased by my grandpa during a visit to the UK in the midst of World War II. Beautiful illustrated old story map of Scotland by Colortext Publications. Chicago, 1935. Map measures 17 inches x 13 1/2 inches. The map has so much visual detail. The borders include a variety of plaids. And you can read the name of the plaid underneath some of them- the print is quite small, and on some, the printing is quite faint. The map shows a lot of animals and people. The map is in fair condition with some issues. It is well worn and has wear and bending to the corners. It also has small pinholes at each of the corners. There are a some tears on the edges. There are several creases/wrinkles in the map. The back has some sort of ink drawing. And you can see a hint of the shadow from that ink through the front. The map looks to have yellowing from age. This is a beautiful Scotland wall hanging map. It would make a lovely. Unique Christmas ... moregift. It's like a work of art. I am not a map expert. Wood mount attached to bottom and the top. Map measures 31.5 x 44.5 inches. Some water stain in Bergen county. Although map is in need of restoration. Most of New Jersey is intact. This map was used a lot. Before GPS this map would have referenced how things could be shipped. It covers not only roads but railroads. Steamship lines and canals. It is more art than map. I love staring at the detail. Really something special. I have had this in my possession since the 1980's. I expected to have it professionally restored and framed and hanging in our retirement home on or near a golf course in the South. But grandchildren came along.
