Wonderful and rare map Titled: A Topographical Map Essex County Massachusetts Based Upon The Trigonometrical Survey Of The State The Details From Actual Surveys Under The Direction Of H.F. Walling Superintendent of State Map 1856 Published by Smith& Morley 166 Washington St Boston Map is a wall hanging map on cloth and attached to original wooden rollers. The map measures approx 62 inches by 62 inches There are significant condition issues with the map. Please read following and note photos. This map is over 150 years old. The overall condition of the map is acceptable with standard uniform discoloration if varnish. And significant crackling or creasing. The major issues are in the upper portion of the map. In the top right corner there is a 4" by 4" area that has suffered significant loss and has almost completely deteriorated. ... moreIt is not in a map area, it is where there was a picture of city hall in Newburyport. In the top left corner there is a dark water stain. There are several areas of separate on along the top roller. Of several creases there is one that crosses the entire map about midway down. An early school map depicting A General Map of the British Isles Produced by John Bartholomew Ltd around 1919 I believe Linen backed and with a lacquered surface. The map is pinned to moulded wooden baton at the top and a wooden roller at the bottom It has it's original rusty hanging loops at the top and hanging or tying ribbons in situ as well As I hope you can see from the photographs the surface has overall cracking. Some surface loss and on the lower LHS as you look at it is in the worst condition(shown in 5) Topographical displaying county boundaries and road routes. The surface is covered with tiny script of place names and geographical features together with their heights(numerical references) Age tanned. Rare Antique Linen 1861 Washington Wall Map of The United States Civil War Era
This auction is for an extremely rare linen-backed 1861 Washington Map of the United States. This map measures about 68" high by 70" wide. This is NOT a reproduction. This looks quite a bit different from the United States we know today. Many states and counties had not formed. There are 1860 census figures published in the bottom portion of the map. As you might have already seen in the photos. This map is in poor condition. The paper has become rather brittle, and some large pieces have flaked off completely(missing) At some point in time, someone had tried to repair the edges with clear tape. The map has become separated from the upper wooden rod and part of the lower rod. This map also has stains/yellowing. Fortunately there are no strong mildew odors(this map smells like old fabric/paper) This map will be packed and shipped ... morewith great care in a PVC tube. I will ship via FedEx ground.
