Here is a wonderful large original wall map of Hampden County Massachusetts dated 1855. The map is based upon the trigonometrical survey of the state. The details from original surveys. Under the direction of Henry F. Walling, superintendent of the state map, Boston, 1855. Entered according to the act of Congress in the year 1855 in the clerk's office of the District Court of Massachusetts. Published by H. A. Haley, 106 Washington St. Boston. The map measures 70" across, 74-1/2" including the top wooden pole, by 45-1/2" high. The map appears all original with it's original linen backing. The map shows, in detail, the roads, blocked off residence parcels with the names of the owner of the property, railroads, public building, churches, schools, businesses and cemeteries as it existed in 1855. Volume control and takes two D batteries. it measures 25 by 25 inches and is heavy and solid wood. The clock worked but could not get the motion part of it to work. 1861 Phelps & Watson American Republic Large Antique Hanging Wall Map Civil War
Auction is for the 153 year old Phelps and Watson map as pictured. Size is 38" x 26" It was printed the year the Civil War began. It has suffered from age and has cracks. Short edge tears and a 3" x 1/4" strip to the left of the Phelps and Watson label has pealed off. It is very fragile. Although it has faded over the years, most of the information is very readable. It has lots of small scenes such as one with Mexicans catching wild cattle. It shows roads, trails, railroads, proposed railroads, and pony express routes across the country. It is quite an education to study this old map. I tried to get enough photos to show the condition but photographing it was a challenge. If more photos are needed please let me know and I will do my best.

1701 Rare Antique Map- "CUMBERLAND"- Picts Wall -John Seller -Camden's Britannia
A rare antique map of"Cumberland" in England. Drawn and engraved by John Seller and published in Camden's"Britannia Abridg'd" in 1701(see scan of frontispiece- not included) This is the northernmost county of western England- see Hadrian's Wall(Pict's Wall) extending into Carlisle. The map was first published five years earlier(1696) in John Seller's"Anglia Contracta" A travellers atlas of small maps which enjoyed considerable success and was printed in several editions from 1696 to 1703. This example, however, was published in Camden's Britannia Abridg'd of 1701(the year that John Seller died) again designed to be portable for the traveller. As testament to the quality of the maps the original engraved plates were purchased by Francis Grose some 70 years later and republished in The ... moreAntiquities of England and Wales between 1773 and 1787. However the original cartouches were simplified. John Seller's name removed( approximately half of the 1701 maps carried his name- this one does not) and the maps were published at the top of a page of text. The later Grose versions are therefore much less rare and are clearly distinguishable by including the text and not having the clear vertical folds which are featured in the originals as they were folded into the octavo sized publication. Very good condition with vertical folds as issued. Attractive later hand coloring. Associated text describing the county and Pict's Wall included(9 pages. 18 sides) Overall map size 6 x 5 inches- paper size 7 x 7 inches. I think this was about the 2nd year that Jacob Monk. The cartographer and publisher made this map available for purchase. Looks pretty good for a 160 year old map, eh? Jacob Monk is considered one of the better map makers in the United States and the value of his maps truly reflect that appreciation. References- Wheat 794(earlier edition) Rumsey 603. Great hand coloring and details in this ... moremap. Compare the condition of this map to ones that rare map stores have available. The coloring and condition of this one appears very comparable to all that I was able to locate out there and there are only 2 of them(one for $3.750 and another for $3,500) I would say this one is in the best condition of the three of them for the map surface. Obviously, the bottom board will need to be reattached. Nothing like this map version that I could find on eBay. Great map perimeter scrolling of flowering and foliage around the map itself. There certainly age wear to the map. I see no rips or old repairs to the map surface with the land masses to report to you. Some cracking of the map surface from brittleness due to age. The top left part of the map show some discoloration probably from heat up by the Washington Territory. Appears to be some minor water spotting along the top edge of the map where the detailed squares are. But not into the map of the United States itself. The map is 62" across. By 56" tall. Add a couple more inches for the boards. The top board is attached, the lower board is loose from the map and in good condition. The map has a cotton fiber backer on it.

Antique 1847 Pennsylvania Wall Map
Just obtained at auction in central PA is this very RARE 1847 Pennyslvania Map Eminent Men made by Apollos W. Harrison Philadelphia No. 8 1/2 South 7th St. It says on the bottom: Entered according to Act of Congress. In the year 1847, by Apollos W. Harrison, in the Clerks office of the District Court of the United States in and for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania" There are pictures of the prominent men of Pennsylvania around the entire map: Benjamin Rush. Robert Morris, Decatur, Wayne, Fulton, Hopkinson, West, and Rittenhouse. Item_condition: The top of the map is pretty beat up. There are about 4 tears with the longest going down about 3" However. As you roll the map out, the condition gets better. There is what appears to be some sort of water stain in the top right corner, but appears to fade towards the start of the top ... moreright county. It appears to be printed on some sort of cloth type paper.you can see the stitching on the back. We discussed this map with several map specialists. And make no mistake about it, this map is very rare and of a good era. According to one opinion in Philadelphia, they have never dealt with a map like this. It DOES NEED WORK in order to be preserved.probably $600-800 worth of restoration. A decorative title cartouche appears bottom left in the form of a banner supported by playful winged mermaids and cherubs. The remarkable Vincenzo Coronelli(1650-1718) Encyclopaedist, geographer, inventor and Doctor of Theology, was citizen of the Republic of Venice. Rare hand-colored antique map of Antoninus Pius's Wall in Scotland published by William Camden in London in 1789 in Britannia. The wall was 39 miles long and stretched from Old Kilpatrick in West Dunbartonshire on the Fifth of Clyde to Carriden near Bo'ness on the Firth of Forth. The sheet measures 17⅜ high by 10¼ inches wide. The intaglio is 13½ inches by 8⅜ inches wide. The sheet is in good condition. Although water stain marks are carelessly spattered here and there across the large canvas. A tear appears in the middle of the side picture of the residence of SG Higgins of Antwerp NY. This 9 3/4" tear is located UPON the original seam where the sheets were originally mounted on cloth backing, hand colored, and then laminated. Pictures should speak for themselves. This unique pull down map of the Caribbean shows countries, islands, railroads, cities and towns, and various geographic features. This map is in great condition for being made circa 1950. The paper is in great shape with a few rolled folds. Stains, and some paper loss along the top of the map close to the dowel. The map measures 36 3/4 inches wide x 26.5 inches tall, and with the wooden dowels included it measures 41 inches wide x 28 1/2 inches tall. This is a large, beautiful wall map full of history and geography!
