This large topographical map book measures about 20" tall and is found in preowned. Well used condition. It's hard to date the book as there are different dates on the maps. The book may or may not be complete. The first page looks clipped. The book shows typical wear and age related discoloration and staining. Some of the discoloration is darker around the edges. Some of the pages have little tears and edge chipping. Please examine all pictures in detail as they are an important part of the description. Antique prints often have faint vertical or horizontal lines visible. Rather than a defect. They are a fascinating historical artifact of the popular engraving process employed by newspapers at the time of the Civil War? During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. This would then be inked and stamped onto the newsprint. The lines on the image above are a result of where the blocks of wood were joined together. Will my antique print deteriorate? Before 1870. This auction features a large antique double-page. Detailed, multi-color map of West Virginia. The map was extracted from the George Cram Modern Atlas-the World, published in 1911, which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the map and its publishing date. Four pages of West Virginia county, city, and town indexes are also included in the offering. This map has a total page size of 15-1/8" wide x 22-1/2" long. And an image size of 13-1/2" wide x 20" long. The map's condition is excellent, with only a little yellowing of the white margins and minor paper nicks in the margin. The map image is in excellent condition. The brilliant colors are exceptionally clear and crisp with very little fading(see photos) The crease shown in the photos flattens out nicely and will not be very noticeable ... morewhen framed.
