They are a fascinating historical artifact of the popular engraving process employed by newspapers at the time of the Civil War? During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. This would then be inked and stamped onto the newsprint. The lines on the image above are a result of where the blocks of wood were joined together. Will my antique print deteriorate? Before 1870. This Map's measurements are: inside border 11' x 14 1/2' Yellow border to yellow border 11 5/16' x 14 7/8' Frame size exterior 19' x 21 1/2' interior 17 3/4' x 20 1/4' This looks like it was framed in the 1940's[see label] Though there is not any certificate of authenticity I do believe this to be original. There is a crease bottom left of center that looks like a repair but is not. On the mat is written"Ogilby 1670" Overall color is true in second to last photo. Delaware, Maryland& West Virginia. This map was from the Johnsons Atlas and Johnsons maps were used during the Civil War. We purchased the atlas at an estate sale out in the country. We guarantee the map to be authentic- not a reproduction. As you can probably see in the photos there are some flaws around the edges, a page fold in the middle where it was in the book, a rip to the bottom crease/page fold and some tears along the edges.
