New York by Harper's Weekly A visually appealing antique wood engraved map. It is an original map extracted from a scarce 19th century illustrated popular periodical. In Good to Good+[or better] condition: displays moderate to heavy age toning as typical(particulary for Harper's image of this era) There may be light scattered spotting or staining. Slight waviness, soft crease across the sheet, light minor edge wear, possibly small minor edge repairs on the back with small pieces of archival tape. Any defects may hopefully be cleary seen in the scanned image. Please examine the scan closely as the picture forms a central part of the description. There is a zoom feature so you can see ... moreclose up. note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] There is text on the back because it was extracted from an illustrated periodical from the 19th century. Great fun to look at both sides. The only way to own this image as an original printed sheet from the 19th century. Harpers Weekly appeared to use an acidic wood pulp paper. With an emphasis upon precision and accuracy, attempting to capture visually and cartographically the regions and battles depicted. Unlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. In near VG. Mostly clean condition. Map displays numerous short minor edge-splits in the wide blank margins, all of which will disappear once the map is matted for display. Also some light minor age-wear- typical for maps of this era, and in no way offensive or severe. Overall a pleasing example of this interesting map. Which is well worthy of display. Very cool Complete Map of Virginia Showing Principal Automobile Roads Electric Lines- Railroads M. O. Post Offices. Banks, Rivers, Canals and 1920 U. S. Census of all Towns. Engraved and Published by the Geographical Publishing Co. Chicago, Ill. The cover measures 6 1/2" x 3" the map unfolded measures 21" x 28" The map is complete, the cover is worn, especially around the edges, the map is folded and when you unfold it there are a few spots where the paper has torn at the fold. There is also a small piece torn out that actually is glued to the cover so the map would stay with the cover, but has been torn away over time. The map itself is very readable with the roads in red and there is no color loss for fading. I would bet not many of these survived. Will make a great addition to your map collection.

Established in 1835 as a lithographic press by Eduard Wagner. Who worked with cartography publisher Karl Baedeker. In 1872 Heinrich Wagner, son of Eduard Wagner, took over, moved the presses to Leipzig, and established his own publishing firm in collaboration with Ernst Debes.
