With an emphasis upon precision and accuracy, attempting to capture visually and cartographically the regions and battles depicted. Unlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. A fine antique map of"Flintshire" in Wales published in Francis Grosse's"Antiquities of England and Wales" between 1773 and 1787. To illustrate this publication Grosse re-used the copper plates originally engraved by John Seller in 1696 and built the maps into his text- the only change he made was to simplify the title block and remove John Seller's name which was present on most of his earlier maps(and he wasn't around to complain! The map is therefore a 17th. century map. Amended and reprinted almost one hundred years later- see interesting history below. He lived a somewhat controversial existence. Being at one time accused of conspiring to kill King Charles II. He was not, however, tried for this treasonous act and went on, surprisingly, to become Hydrographer to the King. Living in Wapping provided Seller with access to various maritime and sea-faring details and requirements, prompting an interest in sea charts and map making. Given this increasing knowledge. Seller embarked on a cartographic voyage of his own, his intention being to chart the coasts and waters around Britain. This collection would be entitled The English Pilot. Originally planned as a minimum three-volume epic. It proved to be a mammoth task and only the first was completed. The remaining two published incomplete the next year. Seller went on to publish more charts of the Mediterranean for the second volume in 1677. The project eventually came to am end in 1680. The map is a copperplate engraving printed on wove paper paper circa 1790. The sheet measures 22 X 17 inches and is in good condition aside from light age toning and a flattened central publisher's fold(as issued) The image is titled"Plan of the Affair near Maxen 20th and 21st Novemb"r 1759. The Battle of Maxen(November 21. 1759) saw the destruction of an entire Prussian army by a much larger Austrian force at Maxen in Saxony in present-day Germany during the Seven Years' War. The Prussian army of 14,000 men, commanded by Friedrich August von Finck, one of Frederick the Great's most able generals, was sent behind the Austrian armies, with the intention of cutting their lines of communication with Bohemia. Frederick expected the Austrian general, Leopold von Daun, to withdraw once his lines were threatened, but instead ... morehe took advantage of Finck's isolation, and cornered him between three separate armies, outnumbering his force. On November 20, the Austrian attack was launched, forcing Finck back off his strong position at Maxen. His retreat was blocked by the Imperial army, and on November 21 Finck was forced to surrender with his entire army, a crushing victory for the Austrians, although von Daun failed to follow up on his success. The map comes from General Lloyd's"History of the late War in Germany" published circa 1790(the first English edition was published in London in 3 volumes between 1766-1790. Artists and Engravers: Following the long period of Dutch domination. The Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in ... moreGermany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. The Homman's produced a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737, and an Atlas Maior with about 300 maps in 1780. They also issued a special Atlas of Germany with full sized plans of principal cities, school atlases and an Atlas of Silesia in 1750 with 20 maps. Subject: Map: Mappa Geographica. Indiae Occidentalis. Map of the West Indies. Six varying sized insets depict the West Indies: Panama. Saint Augustine, Vera Cruz, Santo Domingo, and, a birds-eye view of Mexico City. The primary, largest inset map has d'Anville's name and the date of 1731 in a somewhat decorative cartouche. Titled Carte Des Isles De L'Amerique et Deplusieurs pays de Terre Ferme& authour de Golfe de Mexique it depicts the West Indies, the southern tip of North America, part of Mexico including the Yucatan, all of Central America, and the northern tip of South America.
