The print was removed from a book titled A Popular History of the United States of America from the Aboriginal Times to the Present Day. By John Clark Ridpath and published by The Jones Brothers Publishing Company, Cincinnati and The Riverside Publishing Company, St. Louis, in 1886. Single sheet measures 7 x 10 inches. With image measuring 5 x 7 1/2 inches, blank on reverse. Some tanning, chipping along left edge from removal from book, staining along margins and edges, light edge wear. A lovely and I believe quite unusual map showing the distribution of languages across the two continents. Engraved for’The Bible of Every Land’ This map comes from the first edition in 1851. Printed as a double page, it measures approx 25.5cm x 36cm with a horizontal centrefold. Lovely colouring denoting the different languages. Condition is very good. The printed area is clean and fresh; some minor soft creasing and the odd speck; some marks visible in the margins and the right end of the centrefold has a short split not reaching the printed area. 1785 Antique Map"Part of North America Comprehending the Course of the Ohio"
Revolutionary War era B/W antique map of the United States at the time of printing believe to be 1758 by Kitchin from Guthrie's Geography. An engraved map based on the larger map by Didier Robert de Vaugondy from 1755. This Revolutionary War era map was produced a few years after the time of Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown in 1781 and the signing of the preliminary peace articles in Paris at the end of November, 1782. The Treaty of Paris and Treaties of Versailles were signed on September 3, 1783 with the last troops departing New York in November. The map is filled with detail of early settlements. Indian villages, and topography. North Carolina is shown in an unusual, skinny configuration. The top left of the map is filed with the inset"Supplement to Carolina" which extends the map through South Carolina and part of ... moreGeorgia on the same scale. With an oval title cartouche at lower right in the Atlantic. The map would appear in several ephemeral late 18th Century British publications.
