Frerich Lotter and was published for the German Tobias Conrad Lotter in 1760 after the Guillaume De L'Isle's map of 1703. This publication, one of the last for this map, reflects the rapid political and cartographical changes taking place in the mid to late 18th century. At the time the three American colonial powers of France, Spain& England were engaged in the"Seven Years War" with the map depicting their spheres of influence in three different colours. Spain Red, France Yellow and England Green. England as we know became the main power within North America but for only a short time, with the American Revolution less than 20 years later limiting the English claims to the lands north of the Great Lakes, Canada. Lotter. Like many other eighteenth-century cartographers, based this map on Guillaume De L'Isle's landmark L'Amerique Septentrionale of 1703. However, this map shows important differences from the other derivatives. Issued for a Catholic-themed geography, which was aimed at youth. In good condition. The map displaying signs of usage. Light soiling and edge-wear, a 3" tear from bottom left side across the vignette to the tip of South America now cleanly repaired with archival tape and easy to overlook visually when viewing the map. Note the vast region in North America labelled"Terra Incognita" which has been shaded. As well as the huge river inlet beside Florida, the Great Lakes shown as one huge lake. The large vignette building at bottom left is rather interesting and a bit of a mystery as to what it represents- it is somehow a temple connected to Catholicism, perhaps the ... moreVatican in Rome. Antique Early 1900's Pull Down Classroom Map of North America
For sale is an incredible antique school wall map of North America that was manufactured in Chicago. Illinois by A.J. Nystrom& Co. This wonderfully aged map is printed on a canvas material and comes with the original metal bracket which still works and is very easy to mount. Due to the fragile nature of the map, it must be removed from the metal bracket to roll it up and down by hand. Don't worry though, it's super easy to do. This map would look great hanging in your library or study or would serve as a great educational work of art in your child's bedroom! Additional details: Measurements(with bracket) Approximately 56.5" Long x 42” wide Scale: 1:7.250,000 or 114 miles/inch Circa: 1920's Item Condition: Wonderful antique condition! Colors remain bold and vivid. As noted above. You will need to roll up/down the map ... moreby hand due to its fragile nature. Surface of map has light soilage from years and years of use. Canvas has some normal wear such as wrinkles, bends, frayed edges, light soilage, spotting, etc. We believe that at one point a wooden rod would have been attached to the bottom of the map. As you can see, it's no longer attached. Map has some considerable wear a few inches above the lower brown canvas strip, as seen in picture#5. Map also has some light liquid staining on the lower right hand side. Also has two brown streaks on the lower right hand corner. We tend to think that each of these flaws adds to the overall wonderful antique look of this piece. Please take a gander at the pictures for further details.

One of the most interesting and attractive 19th century wall maps of North America.This majestic work was done in 1854 by Jacob Monk. As the new country was beginning to expand fully to the Pacific following the land gains after the Mexican War. The gold region in California is remarkably inaccurate with Auburn shown well north of Sacramento City and lying between it and the Marysville& Yuba City area. The Great Basin area is also inaccurate and roughly follows the Fremont model. Filled with wagon routes. Explorer's trails, forts, Indian tribes, and so much more. The middle portion of the U.S. is unorganized with only Indian nations named and colored. Much of this area is organized into the Proposed Territory of Nebraska. Minnesota includes Dakota. Which is not named. Out west, only California and the territories of Oregon. New Mexico ... moreand Utah exist. Includes a table of distances and a table of counties and towns with more than 1.200 names. Has a large inset of the World on Mercator's projection. Detailed and important early 19th century folio engraved map based on the cartographic depictions of Humboldt& Pike. With pleasing original full hand color heightened in outline. An important and fine map of Western American interest. Includes the large region of the southern U.S. Much of which is labelled" Louisiana" and which would soon become the Republic of Texas. Covers from New Orleans across to modern day California, northward to Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Oklahoma& Colorado. The mountainous regions around New Mexico are taken directly from Alexander Humboldt's important 1811 map" Carte General du Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne" Which is among the earliest to delineate ... morethe Spanish southwest and Rocky Mountain region with any sense of modern accuracy. Interestingly, this map which is printed just 3 years later adds and amends many topographical details of Humboldts map east of the Rockies, including new mountainous elevations and rivers while also adding new tributaries to the Colorado river, etc. Evidence of Pikes important 1806-07 explorations in what is today Colorado is seen for instance in the unnamed mountain(Pikes Peak in Colorado) Which is here simply labelled"Highest Peak" The Great Salt Lake and the close-by Utah Lake are both mapped with incomplete borders and a fictitious river between them. Large area below these lakes"Unknown Parts" As the area depicted extends east much farther than Humboldts. It includes a large portion of Louisiana Territory, and also includes a relatively accurate mapping of the course of the Arkansas river, as well as many Indian tribes and their villages. Some of these Indian villages even give the number of inhabitants. Much else of interest. This lithograph of the map is from O'Callaghan's Documents Relating to the Colonial History of New York, a 15-volume set published in 1856-57.
