antique San Francisco map advertising the Harder furniture co (1910)
Awesome map of San Fracisco area with great advertisement regarding the F.H. Harder Manufacturing co. Look at pic's closely. Found a copy in the UC Berkley liabrary published by the Thomas Bros. map publishers and they put a date of 1910 on it. Map is in good condition but does have 1- A written in blue on the front right corner and a red line and an 8 in the left hand upper corner and some browning in the middle of the front that you can see but none on the back advertising the furniture. I inherited several hundred maps. Lithographs and blue prints from my uncle who was in the blue print business in Palo Alto, California in the 1970's. His collection of maps mostly all have red reference numbers for filing written on them so my best guess is that they were used as reference maps for newer maps and just general infomation for the ... morebusiness. I will slowly be listing the collection most of which pertain to California and in particular the San Francisco and Stanford(Palo Alto) areas. Measures 21" by 31 1/2" and is in excellent condition on sturdy paper. It is a US Coast Survey map and apparently predates Golden Gate Park or any houses in the entire western 1/2 of the city. This is a vintage 1968 Limited Edition#174/500 reproduction of a pre-Gold Rush map of Yerba Buena. The original name for San Francisco. It in in color and shows the waterfront with boats and a very few streets and buildings. The paper is heavy and sturdy and the map has no tears. It has very wide borders on the right and left and the left border has spots. Perhaps fingerprints? so it is in very good condition. On the back in pencil it says this is a lithograph. This map was originally 20 ¼” high and 13 ⅝” wide; it is torn. Tanned, has stains, fold lines, discoloration, and missing bits. The features have been hand-tinted. The paper is more brown than the photos show- even the scans(last 3 photos) are inaccurate; though the water colors are still good they aren’t as bright as in the scans. It is known that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830. Which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchell’s first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finley’s New American Atlas in 1831. Issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward.
