With dozens of individual buildings, sailing ships, and other landmarks depicted. In VG+. Mostly clean condition. Margins gently toned, but otherwise map remains clean and very well-preserved overall. A lovely example of this fine panoramic view. Of which there are several variants. Antique Map Boston & Environs Geo.H. Walker & Co. Copyright 1905 For Restoration
For your consideration a rare birds eye view map of Boston& Environs by George H. Walker Company. Copyright 1905 Boston Massachusetts. An early colored lithograph on paper framed under glass. Not removed from the frame. There are ripples through the map and some minor distortion to the border at the top. Also a mild water stain on the left edge of the border about an 1" at the widest by 16" long running vertically. The map has faded some but is still within collectable status. The image measures 19-1/8 x 27-11/16 inches. The glass size in the front is 21-3/4 x 29-5/8. The frame measures 23-1/4 x 31-3/16 inches. Weight in the frame 7.1 pounds. The image appears to be clean without rips punctures or stains. The variation in color at the bottom of some of the photos included are not in the map but are glare from the glass from ... morethat the camera picked up. Text at the lower right extolls the areas accessibility and its scenic, recreational and other benefits. The whole is adorned by four pictorial vignettes, three of(real or idealized) vacation cottages and one of a steamer, perhaps inbound from Boston. The Sea Shore Company’s grand vision seems to have been largely unrealized, as the only element of the original plan visible on a modern map is Ocean Avenue paralleling the coastline. This fine copper engraved map formed part of Jedidiah Morse's American Geography. One of the earliest works of its kind published in North America just one year after Isiah Thomas and Ebenezer Andrews formed their business partnership in 1788. This lovely 19th century map is in very good condition. As you can see above. It folds out of a protective booklet. The book covers measure 3 7/8" x 5 5/8" When unfolded, the map measures 19" x 26" I've searched over& again and can't find a date. It appears to have been produced in the 1870s or 1880s. Colton, was an important American map and atlas ... morepublisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W.
