Click Image To Enlarge Reference Map of the New England States This is an authentic 1875 reference map of the New England States with a nice inset of Boston and vicinity in lower right corner. It was produced using a process called cerography where a wax engraving plate was used to imprint the paper. After which, the map was hand colored. Details include: large and small mountain ranges. Mountain peaks, rivers, creeks, lakes, cities, towns and upon close examination what appears to be railroad lines. Carefully removed from an 1875 atlas. There is mild age toning, smudging and minor staining in margins. Small amount of paper loss in lower margin. Map protrudes into the margins. Samuel Drake: 1798-1875) Noted author of numerous works who opened the first antiquarian book store in the U.S. in Boston in 1828. Samuel Drake was the original founder of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1844 and was their President at times over the years. Drake made trips to Europe. Especially London, Edinburgh and Paris searching for rare volumes to sell in his Boston book store and for research for his future books that he authored. This folio edition of"THE HISTORY& ANTIQUITIES OF BOSTON. THE CAPITAL OF MASSACHUSETTS& METROPOLIS OF NEW ENGLAND, FROM ITS SETTLEMENT IN 1630 TO THE YEAR 1770" is Samuel Drake's personal proof copy which is specially bound in highly decorated gilt moroccan leather; vol.2 of a two volume set; 381 pages(page 459-840) published by the author in 1857. NOTE: outside binding ... moreinterestingly not titled but states"BOSTON BOOK- DRAKE 2" use scroll bar to see all 12 photos included) This galley edition was used by a Publisher to make 100 more copies for the general public though this copy has 116 original plates bound inside that are not included in the public copies. It includes copper and steel engravings as well as mezzotints and wood cuts removed from various original sources some dating as early as 1727 up to the year of production in 1857(see fourth photo above of 1727 copper plate engraving on laid or cotton"rag" paper) Also of particular importance is Drake painstakingly cut out windows on blank pages to mount these original plates too allowing both sides of plate to be viewed before he had them bound into this proof copy which obviously took him numerous hours to accomplish let alone all the years he spent in Europe trying to acquire them. The last two photos are from an 1876 auction of Samuel Drakes' rare book collection that was held by his son after his death. Robinson and on one side are advertisements for the United States Hotel, located in Boston. They advertise that they are near the Old Colony and Fall River Lines, and only three blocks away from the railroad station. On the other side is a colorful lithograph map of Boston and the surrounding towns. Copyrighted in 1887, this Boston Pocket Map was“For Sale by all Newsmen” for $0.10. The next antique ephemera item in this auction measures 3 ¾ by 5 ¼ inches and was given by“The Volunteer Refreshment Saloon” of Philadelphia. On one side is a lithograph by W. Boell, which depicts soldiers gathered around the large saloon. There are advertisements for hot coffee and refreshments for Union volunteers. The second lithograph depicts the hospital found at the foot of Washington Street, Philadelphia. There is a long line of Union soldiers at the front door. On the inside of this folded cardboard pamphlet is a list of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Committee members along with a very interesting description of the beginnings of this Philadelphia Refreshment Committee. Biography of Samuel Augustus Mitchell: For over 50 years. Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his successors were one of the most prominent publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut in 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is known about his early schooling. It is known that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830. Which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchell’s first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finley’s New American Atlas in 1831. Issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. This map is on laid paper and dates from the Revolutionary War(1776) and shows a close-up of Boston and its street lay-out as well as labeling the locations of ten different churches of Boston. Beacon Hill, the prison, the Court House as well as a gun magazine and three batteries where 120 cannons were placed to protect the city. Printed on a laminated heavy card stock(front is glossy as issued) original outline hand color. Includes a detailed inset city plan of Boston at bottom left, a tiny plan of Worcester to the right of it, 10 tiny engraved views across the top and bottom. Due to the nature of the tiny engraving work, the map could easily be considered a"miniature" The 10 tiny views and map are all set within an ornate decorative border. And they highlight sites and historical attractions from throughout the state, including Turner's Falls, Northampton from So. Hadley, Springfield, Pawtucket Falls, Pittsfield, Bunker Hill Monument, State House, ... moreInsane Hospital, etc. In VG. Mostly clean condition. Some light spotting and toning- mainly to margins, not infringing on engraved area, small pin hole to each corner. Otherwise map remains clean and very well-preserved, attractive. A rare early 19th century miniature map which does not appear once within the cumulative Antique Map Price Record 1983-2011. Tooleys Dictionary of Mapmakers does indeed note this map under the Goldthwait entry. Although we observe that the engraved date of 1838 appears to have been re-worked, perhaps indicating there is a previous issue of it. Goldthwait apparently was known for pocket and wall maps as opposed to atlas maps, and this curious production would thus fit into his output. Sheet measures c. 7 1/4" W x 5 1/2" H.
