Rare Antique Linen 1861 Washington Wall Map of The United States Civil War Era
This auction is for an extremely rare linen-backed 1861 Washington Map of the United States. This map measures about 68" high by 70" wide. This is NOT a reproduction. This looks quite a bit different from the United States we know today. Many states and counties had not formed. There are 1860 census figures published in the bottom portion of the map. As you might have already seen in the photos. This map is in poor condition. The paper has become rather brittle, and some large pieces have flaked off completely(missing) At some point in time, someone had tried to repair the edges with clear tape. The map has become separated from the upper wooden rod and part of the lower rod. This map also has stains/yellowing. Fortunately there are no strong mildew odors(this map smells like old fabric/paper) This map will be packed and shipped ... morewith great care in a PVC tube. I will ship via FedEx ground. ESTATE FIND ANTIQUE MAP THE WEST INDIES from Johnson's Atlas dated 1864 measures approx. 18" high x 26 1/2" wide Up for auction is a wonderful antique hand colored map that includes Virginia. Delaware, Maryland& West Virginia. This map was from the Johnsons Atlas and Johnsons maps were used during the Civil War. We purchased the atlas at an estate sale out in the country. We guarantee the map to be authentic- not a reproduction. As you can probably see in the photos there are some flaws around the edges, a page fold in the middle where it was in the book, a rip to the bottom crease/page fold and some tears along the edges. This map measures 18" x 14" and plenty of room for matting. It has been placed on a foam board and wrapped in plastic as to protect it from further damage. The plastic does not adhere to the map it is simply placed over it. There are no folds and will be shipped flat. Secure and rigid so it does not bend during delivery. Antique prints often have faint vertical or horizontal lines visible. Rather than a defect. They are a fascinating historical artifact of the popular engraving process employed by newspapers at the time of the Civil War? During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. Antique 8' X 4' A.J.Nystrom School Wall Map "Colonial Commerce & The Civil War"
This map was recovered from an abandoned school in Chicago. The map has some water damage. But the front side is still colorful and is completely intact. It has the original stickers on it, albeit with some damage to them, and it has the original pull ring and ceiling mount. The topics covered are"Colonial Products" Colonial Commerce: Foreign and Domestic" and"The War in the West and South" and"The War in the East" The two stickers have the serial numbers SG8A and SG16 as the map numbers. These are original maps from A.J. Nystrom& Co. in Chicago. It measures a little less than 8' long when fully un-rolled. And the map itself is 4' wide. Feel free to ask any questions about the item!
