The Straits of Anian are shown forming a Northwest Passage between California and the mythical Terra Esonis, which forms a nearly continuous land bridge from the Northwest to Asia. The Pays de Moozemleck is shown east of the Straits of Anian. This landmark remains virtually unchanged through all of Homann's maps of America, despite the later transition to a peninsular California, resulting in an odd change from a coastal to an apparently landlocked position for this landmark. The Great Lakes have a little more updated information and the Mississippi River shows the results of the early French Jesuit explorations. The rivers source extends to the far North of the limits of the maps produced 20 and 30 years earlier. Although Le Moyne's mythical lake in the Southeastern US remains. This map folds out to about 28" x 22" The front cover panel reads: MAPS of Los Angeles and Vicinity- California Bank One side features a large map of downtown Los Angeles showing the locations of California Bank Branch Offices with a Index of Streets printed in the margins around the map. The verso has a regional map of Southern California and smaller maps of the area between Los Angeles and San Francisco and the area between Los Angeles. San Diego and Yuma, Arizona along with the cover panels and some advertising information ... morefor California Bank. These maps were copyrighted by the Clason Map Company and the ones with dates show 1922. This map is 100% complete and fully intact. The original owner made a notes and marks in pencil in pen and there are blots from what looks like an ink fountain pen on the regional regional map of Southern California. Original Antique Map of Oregon and Upper California, 1850 Charles Fremont
Purchased in 1999 from Dumont Maps in Santa Fe. NM, here is the original description that came with the map: Map of Oregon and Upper California from Surveys of John Charles Fremont and other Authorities- Preuss 1850. 19.5"x16.5" This is the smaller version of Fremont's remendously influential map of the area from Great Salt Lake to San Diego. It is apparently printed from a portion of the plate used for the larger map. And was probably issued to meet the demand for maps following the discovery of gold in California. The name notwithstanding, Oregon is not shown, but the map does show all of the Great Basin and routes to the diggings. There is much good information on the west as it was known, but one glaring error places a range of mountainseast-west across the Great Basin. These nonexistent mountains appeared on commercial ... moremaps for years afterward. Folded as issued, else clean and bright. Wheat(TM) 613, in) Wagner Camp 150, Wheat(Gold Rush) 41" Map was unfolded and professionally mounted/framed. Frame has an antique style with wormholes and gold accents. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1561 plate of 1598. Italian text on verso. A landmark map. Enlarged from Gastaldis 1548 map, and one of the most influential of this region in the 16th century. One of the earliest obtainable separately printed maps of the southern part of America. Here in it's most decorative state with mythical islands. This scarce late issue used the 1561-74 plate(a close examination of minute details reveals this) But for this 1598-99 issues by Sessa heirs(identical plate/map for both editions, just different title page dates) the engraver has added a large sailing ship, more place names in the interior, a long river into central Mexico, and numerous ... moremythical islands in the Pacific ocean(some of which are named- Rocca Parrida" La Anub" S. Tonias" Jada" and a series of islands which are unnamed) The plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and thus this map has no further appearances or printings. A survey of the Map Price Record reveals that Ruscelli maps from the 1598-99 printing are offered much less frequently than earlier printings(1561. 1562& 1574) at a ratio of approx. 1 later printing for every 5 offered from earlier editions. This would appear to indicate the later edition may have been printed in smaller numbers and due to increasing market competition, had a smaller distribution. Clean impression. Faint minor touches of offset, small ink stain at base of bottom blank margin which are in no way visually distracting or displeasing, otherwise entirely pleasing example. Description: It is a very detailed map showing forts. Mountains, camps, towns, rivers, roads, railroads and many other details, very informative for the period, originally surveyed in 1867 as stated on the map. It is from the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Published by the Secretary of War, Washington: Government Printing Office, 1891-1895) undoubtedly the most complete set of accurate maps of the Civil War ever published. The title of the atlas appears in the top left margin and plate number in the upper right. A copy of the title page is included with all the publishing details ... morefor authenticity. The atlas was published in a very limited context to be distributed to government officials in the three houses of government as a reference for assessing the Civil War. This is from the original first publishing, that lasted from 1891-5. Size: The map image measures 16 by 27 inches on a page measuring approximately 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. It is a full double page sheet as issued. Condition: The map is in Very Good or better condition with overall light tonal aging. There is a slight split at the bottom of the centerfold and a short half inch repair on reverse of the bottom margin at the fold. Otherwise the map is very clean and would frame up nicely.
