Condition: The map is in Good condition with overall tonal ageing. Original hand coloring, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy page. There is some darkening around the edges, one edge tear repaired on reverse, slight half inch split at the top of the fold and a few minor spots as seen in the pics, see the pic for more on condition. The map is too wide to fit on my scanner so the margins are partially cut off. Lots of details on these maps. See the closeups for examples. + + + There is some usual darkening around the edges of the pages. But generally in good condition for paper that is 121 years old! Also. The margin where the page was bound in the book has staple holes and staining from rust. It is outside the map area and still good for framing. All of my maps are originals. Original, steel-engraved map of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida, North America XIII, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1846, in London, by Charles Knight. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Charles Knight bought the plates from the Society in 1846. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. AN OLD ALABAMA MAP FROM THE 19th CENTURY
This is a very old Alabama map from the late 1800's. It is a surveyor's map of the State of Alabama before the county boundaries were established. Or Montgomery was declared the capital of Alabama. The map is in very good condition except for two small tears at the top which can be fixed with tape or glue. There is no writing or anything on the back. This map measures 13 by 16 inches. It is in black and white. On the side, it has a list of the steamboat routes froom Mobile to Tuscaloosa. It is published by S. Augustus Mitchell of NE corner of Market and 7th Streets; Philadelphia. In tiny letters at the bottom it says: Opp News. Free Shipping.

With the marerital provided by Jack E. Patterson. The print measures 18 by 14 inches and is in good shape. I am unsure why these were printed, but they may have been printed for the Fort Morgan or Fort Gaines Gift shop back in the early 1960s.
