Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. Possibly because of the expense of purchasing a two volume atlas set, the sales of the Atlas of the World did not meet Colton's expectations and it was thus that, in 1856, they also issued the Atlas as

LARGE ORIGINAL 1857 ALABAMA MAP FROM COLTON US ATLAS HAND COLORED
Antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the ... moremap is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. There are a few light shadows lettering from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Barely visible. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. They will all be offered at low opening bids with no reserves. These are all genuine items, not cheesy reproductions or reprints. Please visit our other listings to view them. There is some darkening around the margin, handling smudges mainly in the margin as seen, a couple of edgetear repaired on the Alabama side, and a perforated Brooklyn Library stamp as seen in the pic, otherwise it is very clean with nice strong color that would frame up well. Original Primitive Antique 1873 Gray's Atlas Map Florida W/ Alabama Other Side I brought home a truck load of items from the auction last week. It was a farm estate. And I found some fabulous primitive antiques, as well as boxes and boxes of antique and vintage hardware that I will be listing for a long long time- someone clearly was a woodworker or dabbled in furniture creation or restoration. There’s something for everyone! This beauty did not come from the auction. But from a local small antique sale that I went to recently. The dealer had several(what once were) old book page maps, and I chose my favorite, and for where many of my customers live. This is an old map, and it is unframed, so you will need to frame it. What a wonderful display piece it will make for you, though! In most of the photos, I'm showing you the map how I ... morepurchased it- inside of a sleeve and on top of cardboard. We will leave it this way for shipping(of course we will pack, though- I didn't want you to think that I'd fold or roll it, I will not) This map is from the 1873 publication of Gray's Atlas. It has a map of Florida(with a plan for the Keys) on one side, and a map of Alabama on the other. I removed it very carefully from the sleeve to take photos of Alabama. The map is a nice size for framing- it measures 17" by 15, and it is in excellent overall condition. You can see that the paper has browned lightly- more so on the edges than anywhere. There's one small(1/8" carmel colored stain/foxing mark inside the Keys section that you can see in the photos- it's minor. There's also a light line that looks like a pencil line on the bottom rim- see photo 7- I did not try to remove it in any way. The long edges show some small nibbles/chips all over- especially on the side that would have been in the spine(photos 3, 4, 5) with less on the other side. This is a used vintage linen era post card. Postmarked I think, 1957. It is hard to tell for sure. Card shows a map of Alabama with ten mini views of famous places. Card is a Genuine Curteich-Chicago"C.T. Art-Colortone" Post Card(Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. Distributed by Moore News Co. Birmingham, Alabama. The overall condition is good or better. Always check corners and edges for possible wear(see scan) Card does have minor edge and corner wear. As grading is subjective, please look at scan for faults/defects. A postally unused card may have writing on the reverse. Linen postcards are really colorful. You can tell that a card is a"linen" because you can actually see the raised grain of the paper in the image. Linens were produced from the early thirties through the forties. At this time. New American printing processes allowed ... morefor the printing of postcards on paper with inks that allowed for the use of bright dyes in image coloring. They proved to be extremely popular. Linen postcards document the building of America's new highway infra-structure and the roadside(motels, restaurants, etc) establishments seeking cheap advertising, were quick to see the opportunity. The most known of the early linen publishers, was the Curt Teich Company. The majority of linen postcard production ended around 1939 with the advent of the color"chrome" postcard. Some companies lingered on through the 1940's. The postcard view is now highly sought after by many institutions(including The Smithsonian) and individuals. As it serves as a historical record of the past. Be it the view of a town main street, the local church, school, roadside attraction or the countryside, the post card mirrors the way our parents, grandparents and even we, once lived. Captured in these olden day images are views of people in the dress of the day, often at work, at play, at school or at church. 1862- Hand Colored Map of- Georgia& Alabama- Johnson& Ward First Edition 27" x 17" Steel Plate with Rare Early Edition Boarder This listing is for an original antique Johnson& Ward hand colored steel plate map. This map is very large. Measuring 27" x 17" 68.5cm x 43cm) This particular map is of Georgia& Alabama. Alvin Johnson began publishing maps in 1860. For the first 2 years he published maps with the attribution to Johnson& Browning. In 1862 he began to publish maps under the name Johnson& Ward. This map was produced in 1862 and is a first edition Johnson& Ward map. You can tell the early edition maps by the different boarder around the edge(which we find is much nicer than later editions) This boarder was only used until 1863. The map is original and has not been restored. The hand coloring ... moreis original to 1862. These maps are not uncommon however the earlier editions are much harder to find. We also find the earlier edition maps have a much nicer color. The color of this map is very vibrant(don't let the pictures fool you. They are very difficult to photograph and much nicer in person) There is little to no fox marks on this map. Please take a close look at the pictures to be the final judge of condition. You will get exactly what is shown. This map has not been trimmed. The map is complete. There is nothing on the reverse side. Johnson's maps have become iconic maps to hang on the walls of American homes. Professionally framed and matted there are few that compare.
