Attention time trialists. Triathletes, aero weenies and collectors: Up for auction is a Shimano Dura-Ace AX Aero brake(front only) one of the most aerodynamic and coveted brakes ever produced. Background: In 1981. Shimano debuted Dura-Ace AX Aero, the first component group to feature aerodynamic performance as a central design principle. The crown jewel of the group was the sleek center-pull brakeset, which developed a cult following among time trialists over the following decades. AX Aero brakes were ridden to great success by the infamous Lance Armstrong, including at the 2000 Olympic Games time trial(shown above) Sadly, the group was a commercial flop and was discontinued after only two years of production. Performance: While it certainly passes the"eyeball aero" test. The design was validated last year by Dr. Andrew Coggan in ... morehis wind tunnel testing of aero brakes. His report can be found(the graph above shows time savings over a 180km race) The brake outperformed all but one of its more modern competitors. Finishing a close second to the even rarer Hooker Aero SL. It even showed a significant aerodynamic advantage over the new Tririg Omega. Condition: The brake is used and in good condition. It is perfectly functional with some minor scuffs and scratches from its three decade lifetime. It does not include the original barrel adjuster. But two other options are included: a custom made barrel adjuster, and a very minimal cable stop that may work if adjustability is not required. The brake was just fully disassembled, cleaned and greased. Please note that this brake takes non-standard pads, but standard pads fit by trimming down their length. Here is a 203 mm 6 Piston Front Gator Brake. All that is shown in the picture is included- the lever. Caliper, 203mm mounting adapter, rotor, hose for the front, and brake pads. This brake has less than 50 miles on it and has only one off road ride, normal mounting scratches but otherwise looks new. His popularity with the local youth quickly grew and the city required him to move his business to a different location. Which led to the start of"Earl's Bicycle Factory" in a metal connex shed in an industrial park in Omaha. Nebraska. Over a 20 year span he ran his BMX and Skate Shop with his wife. At some point he spent less time at the shop and started selling on ebay. Thus the start of"earlsstuf" ... moreEarl passed away on August 11. 2008 and we started"sell_all_his_stuff" to sell the inventory that he had collected over the 20 years span of time.
