They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. OWhen the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. Description: A fine example of the scarce 2nd edition of Johnson’s map of the southwestern United States printed in 1861. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to include most of Colorado. In the second edition of this map Johnson made significant changes. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. The Colorado Gold Region, which had been discovered only a ... morefew years previous in 1858, is clearly labeled as are all three Parks. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The outbreak of the Civil War and the wealth of silver under Virginia City(here identified as‘Mormon Settlement’ hastened the conferment of territorial status on Nevada. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California’s border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. In New Mexico and Arizona Johnson has removed the latitudinal border between New Mexico and Arizona that he included in the 1860 edition of his atlas. This was most likely in response to Arizona’s petition for territorial status independent of New Mexico being denied by the U.S. Congress. With o

Mountain, desert, lake, city, peak, etc. is detailed- if it was discovered prior to 1872 in this encompassed proximity, you can be sure it's on the map. There is some toning around the edges. Only 11,497 people in Los Angeles at this time. The very large Tulare Lake on this map is now farmland. The very sparsely populated Nevada has only 14 counties. Quite different configuration than today. The map details mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, islands, deserts, railroads, and cities. The dealer had several(what once were) old book page maps, and I chose my favorite, and for where many of my customers live. This is an old map, and it is unframed, so you will need to frame it. What a wonderful display piece it will make for you, though! In most of the photos, I'm showing you the map how I purchased it- inside of a sleeve and on top of cardboard. We will leave it this way for shipping(of course we will pack, though- I didn't want you to think that I'd fold or roll it, I will not) Please do not buy if you do not want it shipped flat, or buy and then ask me to roll or fold, as I will not- and do not think I can secure it's ... moresafety doing do. This map is from the 1872 publication of Warner& Beer's Atlas of the United States- Map of Nevada and California. It has the map on one side and is blank on the other. I removed only a little(pulled out) and very carefully from the sleeve to take photos of the blank backside- see photo 19. The map is a nice size for framing- it measures 18" by 15, and it is in excellent overall condition. You can see that the paper has browned lightly- more so on the edges than anywhere- and all original, giving it a WONDERFUL rustic primitive charm. There's some small carmel colored foxing marks that you can see mostly on the left side of the map- along the coast, with some on land(small and a lot less) The top and right edges(and corners all over) show some small nibbles/chips all over- especially on the side that would have been in the spine(the right side) with less on the top. They are small and very shallow- on the edges only. Some are recent chip offs, with the small pieces of paper inside of the sleeve- I've left them there.
