An ORIGINAL antique map of the WESTERN UNITED STATES from D. M. WARREN'S Common School Geography. 1876. The States and Territories are individually hand water colored. A dozen or so early railroads are shown in the Midwest and the original TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD(recently completed in 1869) is shown connecting Omaha to Sacramento. Three more proposed routes are shown in the Pacific Northwest and in the Southwest. The Dakotas are still shown as a single large Territory while modern day Oklahoma is the INDIAN TERRITORY just north of TEXAS. The map measures 9 1/2 by 12 inches. The second photo shows the title page of the book with the publication date(Warren never dated his maps individually) Published just a decade after the CIVIL WAR. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. Mostly clean condition. some light damp staining across the top blank margin which will disappear once matted and some light minor age-wear- typical for maps of this era, and in no way offensive or severe. The Counties are individually HAND WATER COLORED and a handful of early railroads are shown confined to the area around the San Francisco Bay in California. Many of the Western Territories are shown quite different from today. NEVADA is shown smaller than today with its eastern edge part of UTAH at the time and the area around modern Las Vegas was part of the ARIZONA TERRITORY. The Cimarron Route of the Santa Fe Trail is shown as well as the Pony Express Route. The Old Spanish Trail, and the Humbolt River Emigrant Road.
