Description: A fine example of the scarce 2nd edition of Johnson’s map of the southwestern United States printed in 1861. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to include most of Colorado. In the second edition of this map Johnson made significant changes. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. The Colorado Gold Region, which had been discovered only a ... morefew years previous in 1858, is clearly labeled as are all three Parks. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The outbreak of the Civil War and the wealth of silver under Virginia City(here identified as‘Mormon Settlement’ hastened the conferment of territorial status on Nevada. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California’s border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. In New Mexico and Arizona Johnson has removed the latitudinal border between New Mexico and Arizona that he included in the 1860 edition of his atlas. The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some minor changes particularly ... morein the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Size: The map image measures approximately 13 by 15 3/4 inches on a 13 3/4 by 17" page. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edges and smudges in the bottom right corner of the margin as seen, otherwise it is very clean with a nice anttique quality that would frame up nicely. This would normally be from an 1852 Mitchell's Universal Atlas. The map is about 15.5 by 12.5 inches. The map is page 37 of the atlas. The map includes counties in California and two in New Mexico. Besides all the topography, trails, roads, towns the map also includes Indian tribe locations. The map is from 1852 based upon counties shown and not shown. This map has different hand wash coloring scheme from all the other 1852 atlas maps documented on-line with several of the California counties being different colors or miss colored and the green of Utah Territory and southern New Mexico being different. The map is in very good condition except ... morethe paper is brittle. There is browning around the map as can be seen in the photos. The back has many stains from the coloring of states on the next page. These stains do not affect the front of the map. There has been one breakage of the paper repaired with archival tape on the back. The split is visible on the front if you look close but does not show up in the close-up photo very well. Included in this map is the state of California and territories of Nevada. Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico with Arizona resting due south. Also shown along the northern border of the map are the newest state of Oregon(1859) and the territories of Washington and Nebraska. This is the first time that Colorado appeared on a map as a territory. Many counties run the length of more than one territory. California has not yet taken its present shape as the eastern border of the runs along the Sierra Nevada mountains. Throughout this map are numerous locations of indian tribes. Rivers, railroads and mining districts. Also depicted in ... morethe map are routes of explorers that include Fremont(1844) Major W.H. Emory(1846) and Gunnison(1853) which also notes where he was killed by indians within the Utah Territory. Text regarding the evolution of the U.S. Mexico boundary as well as geographical description appear in the bottom half of the map. During this period of U.S. western expansion, the borders of the territories changed on a near annual basis. Anyone looking to put together a comprehensive collection of Western American maps most certainly would have to include a few variations of these Johnson's maps. This vast territory incudes the modern day states of California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, as well as adjacent parts of Canada and Mexico.
