Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. This map includes primarily Utah and New Mexico. Portions of this area later comprised portions of Arizona. Colorado and Nevada. Condition ... moreis very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some very light shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Barely visible. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. This is an original antique hand-colored lithographed map of the New Mexico and Utah Territories. Measuring about 16-1/4" x 13-1/4" It was published by J.H. Coltn& Co. New York, copyright 1855. It carries the folio number"No. 51" or"No. 57" and was probably removed from a large atlas or gazetteer. Condition is remarkable for its 159 years on this earth. It has been archivally preserved for more than 30+ years. There is some light foxing in a few spots around the edges. Please see the enlargeable photo to judge condition for yourself. CALIFORNIA - J.H. Colton - Hard Cover Hand Colored Pocket Map - 1853
This is an original hand colored. Hard cover pocket map. It measures approx. 3 1/2" x 5" when closed and the map measures approx. 13 3/4" x 17" when fully opened. Gold embossed on the front cover is"MAP OF CALIFORNIA- J.H. COLTON" The inside front cover lists the various maps available as well as maps being prepared for future sale. This map is dated"1853" and is fully hand colored. At the upper right is an inset of San Fransisco. The back cover shows some dampstaing but this has not come thru to the inside or the map. There is a vertical tear on the spine that is approx. 1 3/4" in length and another at the bottom that is approx. 1/2" in length. The covers are still well attached. The covers are in fairly nice condition with not much wear, other than the dampstaining on the back cover and ... morethe vertical tears along the spine. In reality, the dampstaining is not as bad as the accompanying photos show. It is a light brown and because of the lighting, appears to be darker than it really is. Interior is very clean. The map itself is excellent. Clean, fully bright and fresh. Colors are very bright. There is only a corner crease at the lower right. No other creases(other than the folds as-made) no stains or discoloration and no tears. There are a couple of pinholes that are very small and at the intersection where the folds cross each other. I am offering this wonderful map of the City of San Francisco from 1856. Engraved by Henry Bill, who was a Connecticut based publisher in the 19th century. This particular image was published in Samuel Mander's History of the World. Which Bill published. The view shown on the map is from Nob Hill. Looking down California Street. It specifically identifies certain important locations and buildings with a numbered key, showing the following: North Bay, Contra Costa, Yerba Buena Island, California Exchange, Plaza, Leonards Warehouse, Rincon Point, Market Street Pier, California Street, Central Wharf, Catholic Church, Marine Telegraph and Anjill Island. There is also a note under the image which states"Entered according to the Act of Congress in the Year 1852 by Henry Bill in the Clerks Officer of the District Court of the District of ... moreConnecticut. This image was published several times in the early 1850s, but was only separately published in 1856. The map itself measures 18"x 12" to the outside of the border. And is framed in a simple oak frame; the outside of the frame measures 19 1/2" x 13 1/2" There are some condition issues; the map was originally folded, so the folds are visible. There is a tear on the upper left portion of the map, which is limited to the border and not to the image. There is also foxing on the image and on the border; see photos for detail of these imperfections. This is a quite desirable image and I am offering it for a reasonable starting price.
