New York in 1857 in McNally's System of Geography. Compiled by Francis McNally. The boundaries of Washington. Oregon, Utah, and New Mexico are very different from those of today. There is no Arizona, and no Nevada or Idaho. A printed note at the bottoom labels the land south of the Gila River ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1854, three years before this map was printed. Longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. An inset at the lower left shows San Francisco Bay and vicinity. The map labels Fillmore City as the capital city of Utah Territory. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The outbreak of the Civil War and the wealth of silver under Virginia City(here identified as‘Mormon Settlement’ hastened the conferment of territorial status on Nevada. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California’s border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. This would normally be from an 1852 Mitchell's Universal Atlas. The map is about 15.5 by 12.5 inches. The map is page 37 of the atlas. The map includes counties in California and two in New Mexico. Besides all the topography, trails, roads, towns the map also includes Indian tribe locations. The map is from 1852 based upon counties shown and not shown. This map has different hand wash coloring scheme from all the other 1852 atlas maps documented on-line with several of the California counties being different colors or miss colored and the green of Utah Territory and southern New Mexico being different. The map is in very good condition except ... morethe paper is brittle. There is browning around the map as can be seen in the photos. The back has many stains from the coloring of states on the next page. These stains do not affect the front of the map. There has been one breakage of the paper repaired with archival tape on the back. The split is visible on the front if you look close but does not show up in the close-up photo very well. Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. This map includes primarily Utah and New Mexico. Portions of this area later comprised portions of Arizona. Colorado and Nevada. Condition ... moreis very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some very light shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Barely visible. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. This is the first time that Colorado appeared on a map as a territory. Many counties run the length of more than one territory. California has not yet taken its present shape as the eastern border of the runs along the Sierra Nevada mountains. Throughout this map are numerous locations of indian tribes. Rivers, railroads and mining districts. Also depicted in ... morethe map are routes of explorers that include Fremont(1844) Major W.H. Emory(1846) and Gunnison(1853) which also notes where he was killed by indians within the Utah Territory. This is an original antique hand-colored lithographed map of the New Mexico and Utah Territories. Measuring about 16-1/4" x 13-1/4" It was published by J.H. Coltn& Co. New York, copyright 1855. It carries the folio number"No. 51" or"No. 57" and was probably removed from a large atlas or gazetteer. Condition is remarkable for its 159 years on this earth. It has been archivally preserved for more than 30+ years. There is some light foxing in a few spots around the edges. Please see the enlargeable photo to judge condition for yourself. I have to apologize for the image; I had to take it with a camera as the map would not fit onto my scanner. Feel free to ask any questions prior to the closing date of the auction. NEVADA is shown smaller than today with its eastern edge part of UTAH at the time and the area around modern Las Vegas was part of the ARIZONA TERRITORY. This vast territory incudes the modern day states of California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, as well as adjacent parts of Canada and Mexico.
