Vintage Antique 1853 U.S. Coast Survey Map City of San Francisco& Vicinity. Measures 27 1/2" x 20" We have been told this is a reprint of original. There are no markings that we see that indicate its a reprint. When magnified the paper has a rough texture not smooth. The ink is solid not dotted. There is some staining and or discoloration along the center fold towards the middle upper center. In the same area there is also a spot that appears to have been wet it is about an inch wide.

Dimensions at outside of frame lines: 25" x 18" Overall: 27" x 20" This map. Produced by the US Coastal Survey in 1853 is a steel-engraving. This sheet is in its original monochrome and was the first map of San Francisco made by Americans. One of the earliest U.S Coast Survey maps of San Francisco, published just after the start of the gold rush of 1849. The map shows the city at that time. I believe this has been professionally restored. Has been backed with archival material to provide strength. Possibly cleaned as the paper color is white with no spotting or toning. See close ups to see that the print's integrity was preserved. I can detect old paper fold lines that are 2.75" apart at bottom increasing to 3" at the top. No vertical creases are seen. Original 26 x 40 inch engraved sailing and ocean chart produced by the Coast Survey in 1856. The engraving was done by J. Knight and A. Blondeau and is in beautiful. Fresh condition.
