This map is very large. Measuring 27" x 17" 68.5cm x 43cm) This particular map is of Missouri and Kansas. Alvin Johnson began publishing maps in 1860. For the first 2 years he published maps with the attribution to Johnson& Browning. In 1862 he began to publish maps under the name Johnson& Ward. This map was produced in 1862 and is a first edition Johnson& Ward map. You can tell the early edition maps by the different boarder around the edge(which we find is much nicer than later editions) This boarder was only used until 1863. The map is original and has not been restored. The hand coloring is original to 1862. These maps are not uncommon however the earlier editions are much harder to find. We also find the earlier edition maps have a much nicer color. The color of this map is very vibrant(don't let the pictures fool you. They are very difficult to photograph and much nicer in person) There is little to no fox marks on this map. Please take a close look at the pictures to be the final judge of condition. You will get exactly what is shown. This map has not been trimmed. The map is complete. There is nothing on the reverse side. Johnson's maps have become iconic maps to hang on the walls of American homes. Professionally framed and matted there are few that compare. A great addition to your office or study or any other room of your home. All of our maps and prints are shipped using strong cardboard mailing tubes. We only use acid free materials. Description: A fine example of the scarce 2nd edition of Johnson’s map of the southwestern United States printed in 1861. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to include most of Colorado. In the second edition of this map Johnson made significant changes. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. The Colorado Gold Region, which had been discovered only a ... morefew years previous in 1858, is clearly labeled as are all three Parks. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The outbreak of the Civil War and the wealth of silver under Virginia City(here identified as‘Mormon Settlement’ hastened the conferment of territorial status on Nevada. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California’s border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. In New Mexico and Arizona Johnson has removed the latitudinal border between New Mexico and Arizona that he included in the 1860 edition of his atlas. This was most likely in response to Arizona’s petition for territorial status independent of New Mexico being denied by the U.S. Congress. With o

Unlike most maps in the 1863 Johnson atlas, this map was a unique production and therefore not based upon the earlier atlas maps of J. H. Colton. Rather, it seems that Johnson derived this map by dissecting the plates of his 1859 wall map of North America and then incorporating, oftentimes superimposing, more contemporary detail. Johnson added considerable detail in the mountainous regions of California, Nevada, and Colorado. Arizona and New Mexico appear as independent territories but, for the most part, adhere to the old'New Mexico' county structure. The southern boundary of Nevada with Arizona is set at 37 degrees of Latitude such that Las Vegas, which is noted, rests firmly within Arizona. This rare and interesting map published during the last year of the CIVIL WAR shows the States and Territories of the UNITED STATES individually hand water colored. A number of railroad routes are shown in the eastern half of the country while 4 proposed TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD routes cross the West. The Northern Pacific, the Central Pacific, The Union Pacific, and the Southern Pacific. In addition other famous routes are marked including the PONY EXPRESS ROUTE, the SANTA FE TRAIL, and the 1843-44 exploration route of John C. Fremont. Many of the Western Territories were quite different from the States today. The map shows a HUGE DAKOTA TERRITORY which included all of NORTH and SOUTH DAKOTA and nearly all of modern WYOMING. This is the first time that Colorado appeared on a map as a territory. Many counties run the length of more than one territory. California has not yet taken its present shape as the eastern border of the runs along the Sierra Nevada mountains. Throughout this map are numerous locations of indian tribes. Rivers, railroads and mining districts. Also depicted in ... morethe map are routes of explorers that include Fremont(1844) Major W.H. Emory(1846) and Gunnison(1853) which also notes where he was killed by indians within the Utah Territory. This is Johnson and Ward's 1864 map of the American southwest. Features the fretwork border common to Johnson's New Illustrated Atlas after 1863; was a complete re-engraving of the 1862 map with much detail added. It is in very good condition. It has just been pointed out to me that eBay is automatically adding the word"acceptable" under condition. This map is far more than what I think"acceptable" means. The reverse sides of pages 66 and 67 are shown in final two photos. The size of open map is 26 x 18 inches. Shipping is free and map will be packed flat.
