A New Map Of The State Of California. The Territories Of Oregon& Utah, and the Chief part of New Mexico" Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1850 by Thomas Cowperthwait& Co. This would normally be from an 1852 Mitchell's Universal Atlas. The map is about 15.5 by 12.5 inches. The map is page 37 of the atlas. The map includes counties in California and two in New Mexico. Besides all the topography, trails, roads, towns the map also includes Indian tribe locations. The map is from 1852 based upon counties shown and not shown. This map has different hand wash coloring scheme from all the other 1852 atlas maps documented on-line with several of the California counties being different colors or miss colored and the green of Utah Territory and southern New Mexico being different. The map is in very good condition except ... morethe paper is brittle. There is browning around the map as can be seen in the photos. The back has many stains from the coloring of states on the next page. These stains do not affect the front of the map. There has been one breakage of the paper repaired with archival tape on the back. The split is visible on the front if you look close but does not show up in the close-up photo very well. The breakage runs near the Rio Grand from San Juan River to South Pass and then from near Browns Hole to head of Bunkara R. Seller will pay for insurance and tracking.

Arizona was divided into only 6 counties—Mohave, Yuma, Pima, Pinal, Maricopa, and a huge Yavapai County—vs. the 16 counties in present-day Arizona. Idaho has only 8 counties(instead of 44) Nevada is shown as having 14 counties(instead of 16) and Utah has 21(vs. 29) Oregon 22(vs. 36) but California was already divided into 50 counties, only 8 fewer than at present. Based upon Mitchell's seminal pocket map of 1846, this map covers from Vancouver Island to the Gulf of California and from the Pacific shore to Pikes Peak and the Yellowstone River. This vast territory incudes the modern day states of California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, as well as adjacent parts of Canada and Mexico.
