This very attractive double page map sheet titled NEVADA and UTAH is from the 1899 printing of The Century Atlas of the World. The map itself is dated 1897. The atlas was"Prepared under the superintendence of Benjamin E. Smith. A.M. and published by The Century Company, New York. The highly prized maps in this atlas were engraved by The Matthews-Northrup Company of Buffalo, NY. The maps from The Century Atlas are acknowledged to be among the finest of the late 19th century. Displaying plenty of sharp detail. Attractive colors, and good margins for framing. My photos really do not do this fine map justice! The page is about 12 1/2 by 17 inches in size. And features original handcoloring done at that time. It is on a sheet measuring slightly over 12 x 15 inches in size, with the map image surrounded by an appealing ornate border. The map is in Fine condition. There is a credit line printed in very small script in the upper left corner beside the map which says: Entered according to the Act of Congress in the year 1874 by S. Description: A fine example of the scarce 2nd edition of Johnson’s map of the southwestern United States printed in 1861. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to include most of Colorado. In the second edition of this map Johnson made significant changes. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. The Colorado Gold Region, which had been discovered only a ... morefew years previous in 1858, is clearly labeled as are all three Parks. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. Antique hand colored map engraved by S Augustus Mitchell Jr. Dated 1867.Measures 15 1/4" by 12 1/2" overall. This depicts Nevada and Utah. I believe this came out of his Mitchell's New General Atlas that was published in 1868. It has the fancy grapevine border and accuracy the company was known for. 1897 Nevada& Utah Original Colored 15" x 10.5" Detailed Map This listing is for an original 1897 color lithographic map of Nevada and Utah. It is extraordinarily detailed for a map its size and includes seemingly every city and town. As well as, counties, railroad lines, geographical references, including contour lines, hills, mountains, lakes, rivers, ponds, islands and prominent points if applicable. The map is on standard weight paper and measures 16.5 x 11.75 inches including ample margins that are somewhat greater than shown in the picture. The condition overall is fine and as shown in the pictures. The paper is over 100 years old and is age toned as should be expected. The map is a high resolution scan and therefore the size and details may seem to be greater than what is viewed with the naked eye. These maps were tipped ... moreinto the atlas and therefore contain no staple marks. Most of the maps are double-page and therefore have a crease down the center with the tipping strip on the reverse. Residual of the tipped-in strip remains but it could be removed or trimmed prior to matting and framing. The crease may be pressed flat but it will likely never completely disappear. It should also be expected that the page edges will show some minor wear and soiling but the margins are sufficient that the wear will not be noticeable after being matted and framed. As should be expected. There is age toning as the result of being exposed to air and more specifically moisture in the air. The paper is cream toned which tends to get slightly darker toward the edges. The fold in the center is darker as well. There are no water stains, nor unexpected odors. The reverse side is largely blank having only the map number and name in each corner. There is no post printing damage or faults such as offsetting, tears, holes, foxing, or writing marks, other than what would be disclosed herein.
