The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Size: The map image measures approximately 13 by 15 3/4 inches on a 13 3/4 by 17" page. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edges and smudges in the bottom right corner of the margin as seen, otherwise it is very clean with a nice anttique quality that would frame up nicely. Idaho has only 8 counties(instead of 44) Nevada is shown as having 14 counties(instead of 16) and Utah has 21(vs. 29) Oregon 22(vs. 36) but California was already divided into 50 counties, only 8 fewer than at present. Political and topographical features are noted and color coded with elevation rendered by hachure. This map was issued in the final years of the California Gold Rush and just prior to the construction of the various transcontinental railroads. Though California, following the Gold Rush population explosion, was admitted as a free state to the Union in 1850, the surrounding territories remained largely dominated by various American Indian nations, many of which are noted. Also noted are the various exploratory, emigrant, and military routes through the region, including the Spanish Trail from Los Angeles to Santa Fe, the Oregon Route, Louis and Clarke's Route, Lt. Col. Cooke's Wagon Road, Kearney's Route along the Rio Gila. Though the Gadsden Purchase occurred in the same year this map was published, it is not included here, thus is the city of Tucson(Tueson) is set firmly within Mexican territory. However, several pre-Gadsden alternatives to the U.S. Mexico border, as proposed by Bartlett and Graham, are noted. This map was prepared by S. A.
