1870“United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel Clarence King Geologist in Charge. Atlas. Accompanying Volume III on Mining Industry. Engraved and printed by Julius Bien. The atlas is complete and consists of 14 plates on thick paper with blank backs containing the 14 lithographed maps which are in excellent shape. Cover is green morocco with gold color inlay and about 19 x 24 inches. Letterpress title-page. Issued as part of the report of the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel under Clarence King with significant historical maps of the silver and gold mines of Nevada and California. The thick cover is well worn at the corners and along the spine. Some bends and scuffing to the green portion too. The first flyleaf has some browning at the outer edge in two place and a nick of missing paper. There ... morebegins a water stain at the top near the spine on the inside cover and fly leaf pages which diminished on the pages as one goes into the book and becomes stronger once again on the last few pages. See two photos of this from the front flyleaf and the last map. Second front flyleaf has less water damage at the top near the spine. Small tear corresponding to the nick of the first flyleaf page and has the imprint of the title page ink clearly visible. All the maps are in excellent shape with no tears or marks. CA, regarding the Bostwick Bar, a claim owned by David Lewis Drew. Written in ink on waxed paper. Measures about 10 ½ by 18 ¾ inches. Reads M.S. no 2177 of claim of David Drew upon the Bostwick Bar Mining Claim, containing 3800 acres… Surveyed by A.B. Beauvais Oct 20th 1883. Pat’d Apr 19- 87. Map shows the Stanislaus River. Rear of map reads BB Placer Claim at top. Map has fold marks and wrinkles but is otherwise in excellent condition. David Drew was a California pioneer who settled in Copperopolis. USA David Lewis Drew was born in Plymouth. Massachusetts, the fourth generation of David Drew's. His ancestral lineage traces many Mayflower passengers and other early settlers of Plymouth. After his mother died, David did not get along with his new step-mother and decided to find his'fortune' in the California gold fields. One of his mining claims was at Bostwick Bar on the Stanislaus River in Calaveras County, California and was known as the'Ruby' Placer Mine. David married Helen Marr Farrar who had migrated west with her father and younger sister from Wisconsin after the death of her mother. Brother and grandmother. After their marriage they lived on Mormon Creek and the Stanislaus River for about 12 years. The location was always a little dangerous and after David was attacked by Indians at their home. He moved his family into town in Copperopolis, Calaveras County. David's gold panning and prospecting never produced much money although he was involved in the ownership of many mines and claims.
