This rare and interesting map published during the last year of the CIVIL WAR shows the States and Territories of the UNITED STATES individually hand water colored. A number of railroad routes are shown in the eastern half of the country while 4 proposed TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD routes cross the West. The Northern Pacific, the Central Pacific, The Union Pacific, and the Southern Pacific. In addition other famous routes are marked including the PONY EXPRESS ROUTE, the SANTA FE TRAIL, and the 1843-44 exploration route of John C. Fremont. Many of the Western Territories were quite different from the States today. The map shows a HUGE DAKOTA TERRITORY which included all of NORTH and SOUTH DAKOTA and nearly all of modern WYOMING.
