Antique Mahogany Gentleman's Chest with Brass Hardware
There's not too much known about this peculiar box other than the name on the inside says"Exeter Change Strand London- Clark. Research indicates it was possibly Thomas Clark who resided in the Exeter Change of London from the 1750's to 1780's. This is believed to've a Gentleman's Chest that appears very old but may have been refurbished with the Red Felt inlay. The box has a secret pull pin slide out drawer on the side. A ring from a cup on top and a slight crack on the interior lid. The corners have a brass reinforcement and the sides are adorned with very unique looking Gargoyles. Original Jenny Lind. Stagecoach trunk, made in Easton Pa. The trunk is covered in brown leather with ornate brass nails. The straps that go over the top are broken and missing the ends. one original handle is still attached, the locking mechanism is incomplete and there is no key. The trunk dimensions are: Height 16 1/2, Length 29 5/8, Width 17 1/8. This trunk is very original and has a wonderful patina, very minor restoration is needed, you can restore them 100 times, but they are only original once. I have looked at other trunk websites with a researchable database of over 400 trunk manufacturers in the U.S. and I could find nothing on this particular manufacturer. I did drive to the street were they were made, and the buildings and addresses are still there and took some pictures and posted them for reference. Sold AS-IS. Somewhere all the road someone lined it with old wall paper. That paper is also old as there are areas where it is coming off and very worn. It would make a nice project for someone to re line the inside with different vintage paper. There are many old age cracks and repairs. There is a center narrow piece of wood at the very center of the top that has been replaced. There is some old termite damage near the bottom. Antique Blanket Chest (wooden hinge) hand crafted, hand forged nails? 6 plank
I am not an expert in antique furniture and I will try to describe the little blanket chest to the best of my ability. The measurements are 31" X 16" X 17" The exterior of the piece show wear with nicks around the base. The top was originally a solid plank but has been repaired in the past to keep the plank from cracking more. What is so unique about this piece is the wooden hinge system it has. Clearly this piece was handcrafted. On the inside you can see the panel has been tooled maybe by hand? The pins and nails used(with the exception of the newer repairs) appear to be hand forged. The bottom is removable in two pieces not sure if the two pieces were originally joined together at one time. The piece has been oiled and no other attempts have been made to restore this. I do not know the date of this item nor do I know the ... moretype of wood used in making this chest. If anyone knows more about this piece I would love to find out more information. This is a Ladies Vanity Box and it’s one of the finest I've come across. Towards the end of the 18th century these sort of dressing cases were manufactured specifically to accompany upper class individuals during travel. Theses sort of dressing cases spoke volumes about the owners wealth and place in society. Such travelling was only done by the elite. By the Victorians times more women were starting to travel and their requirements were anything but utilitarian. This Example contains a wide range of decorative silver plated bottles and jars as well as some beautification tools. All designed with pure luxury in mind. In the rear of the lid is a letter holder and mirror. The box is made of two main drawers. One especially for Jewellery and the other for letters. Its secured shut with the original Bramah lock and key in fully functional ... morecondition. Original chase brass handles and hinges. The exterior of the box is made from a fine Coromandel wood which really gives of a dignified. Distinguished grain for a superb look of quality. This has old metal straps and I believe there are SOME square nails as shown in the 5th photo. Nice patina that has been cleaned up with some lemon oil to show the wood grains. Handles are wood! The latch does not work so when you open it you will need to push lightly where the lock plate is and it will open just fine. You can see where there are some new screws to secure the lock when it could not be opened without a key. There are a few others areas that a new screw or two have been added where they are missing to secure the straps or hinges. There is a split in the top but it is solid and only adds to the vintage look of this old piece. It is a nicely made. Solid little trunk. This is a beautiful hip truck. The leather handles are missing as shown in the one photo. It has wheels on the bottom. The inside shows some stains but is very nice. No key. Antique Marshall Fields Steamer Trunk made by Oshkosh
A chance to own a great piece of history! Up for auction is a Marshall Fields and Company Chicago steamer trunk by Oshkosh. The last patent on the trunk is 1930. The initials L.S. are on the trunk. It aligns when put together and goes together but does lock/shut completely. Possibly some part of brass closure is missing. Does have a slight musty odor. It has all the drawers on the right side of the trunk and has a curtain with an iron on the left side of the trunk. I think something is missing from the bottom left of the trunk, possibly a shoe drawer? It has the Marshall Fields and Oshkosh tags on it. It is brown and there is wear on the outside as it has not been restored. There are some white marks also on outside. It has the leather handle on the trunk and it looks there are numbers on the handle. It measures 42 by 22 by 23 and weighs ... moreapproximately 100 pounds. The latch and handle are intact and work like they should. The lid opens/closes easily. It is worn- marks. Scratches, a label on the lid, tape residue. Bent edges, and over all wear. Please look at the pictures because they are also part of the description. To me it looks brown but in the pictures the camera flash makes it show up greenish. The label on the inside reads'NVF Kennett Containers National Vulcanized Fibre Company Wilmington Delaware' I have no idea if it is original. Not sure what it is made out of- it looks metal but has a more pliable'plastic like' feel. We purchased this beautiful old blanket chest at an estate sale(Centennial Farm. Jackson County) in Brooklyn, Michigan from the family. The chest is all original just like we bought it. The chest has the original blue paint and is made of all pine wood. The hinges are good as well as the lock(no key)see last picture of lock) The chest is hand planed(see pic.11) with a one board top, front, sides and bottom. The feet are separate pieces from the other boards. The measurements are 43 1/4" wide, 17 1/4" deep and 22 3/4" high(tall) There are 2 names on the boards as you can see in the pictures. One is Sidney McKee? and the other is L.G. Picket. I think I looked at them several times. If anyone can identify the names better please do so. The inside of the chest has the hidden drawer as you can see in the pictures. The entire piece ... moreis handmade and is just a wonderful piece of history. Antique Mirrored Chest- Decorative Cabinet
I acquired this unique piece of antique furniture at an estate sale in Charlotte. NC. It is most unusual and I personally, after much research, have been unable to locate another one like it. Therefore, I am unable to give it a proper'name' The antique is solid. Sturdy and is in very good condition. There have been a few minor repairs to the delicate scroll work but they may not even be noticeable in the photos. The 3 circular mirrors are made with beveled edge glass and are encased in wood. There is a beveled edge mirrored door that has a lock and original key. Inside are 3 removable shelves and with the bottom space. You have 4 shelves inside to store linens, sheet music, plates, silverware, etc. On the right side are two exterior shelves that are surrounded with detailed scroll work. There is an intricately carved two handled drawer ... morethat runs the width of the piece and is in good working order(slides easily) Even the feet of the piece are interesting!
