ANTIQUE STEAMER CHEST VICTORIAN DOME TOP TRUNK - RESTORED REFINISHED WITH KEY
Up for sale is this beautiful antique dome top steamer trunk with ornate embossed metal work and a working key. The trunk measures 32" long by 18" wide and 21" tall. The exterior of this trunk was cleaned. Sanded and the wood slats were stained with minwax"golden oak" then the trunk was sealed with spar urethane. The interior lining was removed then the wood was sanded and stained with minwax"golden oak" as well. This trunk shows some wear from age and has some minor flaws i.e. one of the hinges is broke(does not effect the stability, very functional) overall the trunk is in very good condition. Arch Top Steamer Trunk Beautifully restored. 1800's trunk. Top is covered in a crocodile vinyl, new handles made of the same crocodile vinyl. Wood has a deep red mahogany finish, remainder of trunk is finished in deep browns, finished on the bottom also. Interior is covered in a deep brown felt. Nice sturdy piece. Doesn't look like it ever had latches, does have a lock, but no key. I have been told that a locksmith will be able to come up with a key, due to the primitive nature of the lock. RARE* Antique George B Bains& Sons Trunk These trunks are quite hard to find these days since few have survived their travels…and this is one lucky survivor since originally they were intended to be light weight but they weren't very strong. This one is in very worn condition. The original decorative brass lock is beautiful and extremely rare. The lock is marked Pat’D May 1870 and Sept 1887. The lock was made by the Star Lock Works which was established in Philadelphia in 1869(formerly C. Liebrich. An early American locksmith who started in 1836) Inside the trunk is the original maker's label of George B. Bains and Sons, a successful trunk maker in Philadelphia for many years. Inside is a removable upper shelf insert to reveal more trunk space in the bottom. The bottom has condition issues and the outer straps are missing. There ... moreis no key for the lock. There are initials M. E. W. on the side of the trunk and a sticker on the side that reads Pennsylvania Railroad Company Broad St. Station Storage Room M. Train 190(Broad Street Station(demolished in 1953) was the primary passenger terminal for the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1881 to the 1950’s. This is an absolutely gorgeous antique steamer trunk. As you can see in the photos the wood really accentuates the black color. The wood is beautiful. Much of the leather remains although both side straps have rotted away which is very common in a trunk of this age. The metal accents. Rivets and corner pieces are very ornate. Similar ones seem to be from the late 1800's but this is unique in the fact that it is covered in metal with wood trim. It has a flat top. Removable tray and wheels that I placed coasters over. This trunk has a lot going for it. With its flat top. It makes a nice coffee table. Once it gets aired out, it would be extra storage space. It is quite attractive, in a"shabby chic" sort of way. It is quite old, although I don't know where it came from. My mother had it in her attic for as long as I can remember(which is a pretty long time) For the past 8 years, it has been in storage. WE just got it out, but since we have 2 others, we really don't need this one. It is black, with brass fittings/edges, so its quite attractive. Unfortunately we didn't have the key so had to"pick" the lock. It will shut properly, so you can carry it, but won't lock. The leather handles on each end are well worn, but we were able to use them-carefully! to move the thing. Inside, it has a decent lining, which you can see in ... morephoto 6. There are 2 trays, neither one of which is the original, as they don't fit on the edges properly. The first, shown in photos 7 and 8, has 2 compartments and fastens with a couple leather straps with snaps(one is broken) The edges of this drawer are rather crushed(see photos 11 and 12) There is another tray underneath, which has some sort of dried goop, that probably was gooey at one point, as it has been covered with tape. Wood tray for antique steamer trunk. Tray measures 29 1/2" long. 15 5/8"wide, and 5 1/2" deep. It originally sat on wood side supports built into the trunk. Tray has small metal brackets on each end with a divider down the center. This came out of an old roll-top or camel-back trunk, but would fit a flat-top trunk as well. There is a sliver of wood missing from the center divider as shown in the first picture. It's clearly been around the world a few times but has a lot of life left. Antique trunks. Also called traveling chests, were originally used as luggage for extended trips by stagecoach, train, or steamship. The classic flat top trunks with canvas or metal background and hardwood staves were made from about the 1870s to around 1920. They are often covered in smooth metal, embossed, metal, or canvas. They then have wood slats and metal banding to strengthen them and for decorative design. These range from the basic trunks for utility to the more elaborate French and European designers. This is simply a HUGE steamer trunk. One of the largest domed trunks I have come across. It is 40" wide. 32" high and 22" deep. It is a very sturdy and solid trunk. The center lock was cut off of it, however the side latches work properly. It is incredibly ornate and has immense potential. The insert inside the lid works but is coming loose and there is no drawer insert. Trunk still has a sticker on the bottom from the American Railway Company from the 1920's era. Large Antique Dome Top Camel Back Steamer Trunk Tin & Wood --- 34” x 26” x 19”
This antique dome top trunk is in marvelous condition for its age. There is no major damage to this trunk. Just normal wear and tear that you would expect in an item this old. This beauty has tons of character! The beautifully curved dome top, with 4 strips of curved 2-inch wood…is a sight to behold. Just on the top of this trunk are 14 ornately etched plates of metal hardware. All the tin on the chest is embosed with a raised floral pattern. It is truly beautiful. The lock comes without a key and I am not sure if it works. Both latches operate properly. Both leather side handles are missing. They can easily be replaced but I want to leave the trunk 100% original. The trunk is made from tin, metal, and wood. There is a total of seventeen 2” wood strips of varying lengths found on all sides of the trunk. The wood strips look like oak to me…they’re ... morein excellent condition. The trunk measures about 34" long across the bottom x 19” wide at the ends x 26” tall to the center of the dome, which is the highest point. The insert inside the trunk is fully functional and just needs a new coat of lacquer. The trunk was found with many others in the basement of an old building in lower Manhattan. The building manager said they were stored there years ago from unclaimed steamer trunks owned by immigrants who came over from Europe to Ellis Island. Please ask any questions. Antique Camelback Steamer Trunk Dome Top Tin Storage Toys Treasure Chest
This is a gorgeous antique camelback steamer trunk. It measures 33.5" x 19" And the dome reaches 20 3/4 inches tall. It has curved wood pieces with tin fittings, and it has wheels underneath. One of the side latches works perfectly, and the one on the left will fit closed but will not stay closed. I have not tried to close the main latch in the middle because I do not have a key. Note the older style slightly rectangular nailheads. Inside you can see some bare wood in places. But much of it is still covered by the original paper. You can also see two stickers that say Uncle Sam US Army standard 10 1/2. I have no idea what that refers to or their date. Just to the right of the right sticker, you can barely see the remains of the original sticker that was in the trunk. There is only a very, very slightly musty odor. Steamer trunks(named after their location of storage in the cabin of a steam ship. Or"steamer" which are sometimes referred to as flat-tops, first appeared in the late 1870s, although the greater bulk of them date from the 1880-1920 period. They are distinguished by either their flat or slightly-curved tops and were usually covered in canvas, leather or patterned paper and about 14 inches tall to accommodate steamship luggage regulations. There has been much debate and discourse on what these types of trunks are actually called. In some old catalogs, these trunks were called"packers" and the"steamer" trunk actually referred to a trunk that is often called a cabin trunk. An orthodox name for this type of trunk would be a"packer" trunk, but since it has been widely called a steamer for so long, it is ... morenow a hallmark of this style. There is a sticker on the top of the trunk that indicates that this trunk traveled on the Grace Line SS Cecilia sailing to New York. The Santa Cecilia was built in 1913 by William Cramp and Sons. Philadelphia. PA. She was acquired by the US Navy in March of 1919. In 1935 she was decomissioned and broken up so this trunk had to have been used sometime before then. This is a very old childs steamer trunk for small dolls. It's wood covered with decorative paper. Has a metal band around edge of lid. Has leather handles but one needs replaced. Has latch and lock but I don't know if it works because I don't have a key. Hinges are good. Needs new strap to hold lid up when you open it. Also still has the top insert. For as old as it is its in pretty good condition. The paper covering is very fragile. Is already missing pieces. The trunk measures 10" long x 4" tall x 6" deep. It is a very neat piece.
