Cathedrals and crusaders. The pained and illuminated manuscript is amongst the greatest artistic triumphs of the Middle Ages, demonstrating social, intellectual, religious and cultural attitudes of medieval life. This leaf is from a book called a Breviary, used by monks and priests to conduct their daily services. It was made inSouthern France soon after 1450. A Breviary is composed of many books, with prayers, hymns and anthems, Psalms, a litany and sanctoral of saints, and readings for the ... moredaily devotions divided into eight separate hours. The sheets were rulled leaving space for initials and the text carefully copied with a quill in uniform calligraphy. The scribe would often write the initial letter of a chapter or prayer larger and in red ink, called rubrics. Decoration was adde

Medieval 15th Century Vellum Leaf Breviary -hand scribed monastic scribe, 1490
Medieval Vellum Leaf from a 15th Century Breviary(hand scribed by a monastic scribe. 1490) A Leaf from a 15th Century Breviary. Done by a monastic scribe. Probably in the Low Countries or in Northern France, circa 1490. Compact Gothic lettering is typical of all medieval breviaries and similar small books of devotion, as is the fine vellum employed. The blue initials used throughout are of encrusted lapis lazuli, prepared by grinding the semi-orecious stone into a fine powder: hence the lasting quality of this color. The vermilion must also have been of the best quality, judging by its freshness as contrasted with the black. Measures 4 3/4" x 6 1/2" Tape residue and staining at bottom Check out my other items. As I will consolidate shipping.
