To appreciate a medieval manuscript is to undertand it's place in the medieval world. all aspects of life were acted in a religious interpretation with an ever increasing number of churches, festivals, saints, and holy days. Most manuscripts that have survived are of a religious nature, and churches and many homes kept books with various compilations of scripture. Manuscript books were tediously but carefully written by hand. Each page with unique initials and decoration. The creation of an illuminated manuscript was complex and required the joint labors of professional scribes to write the text in Gothic script, and artists to illuminate the pages with decorated initials and foliated borders of consisten quality throughout. The sheets were rulled leaving space for initials and the text carefully copied with a quill in uniform calligraphy. The scribe would often write the initial letter of a chapter or prayer larger and in red ink, called rubrics. Decoration was adde

Medieval 15th Century Vellum Leaf Breviary -hand scribed monastic scribe, 1490
Medieval Vellum Leaf from a 15th Century Breviary(hand scribed by a monastic scribe. 1490) A Leaf from a 15th Century Breviary. Done by a monastic scribe. Probably in the Low Countries or in Northern France, circa 1490. Compact Gothic lettering is typical of all medieval breviaries and similar small books of devotion, as is the fine vellum employed. The blue initials used throughout are of encrusted lapis lazuli, prepared by grinding the semi-orecious stone into a fine powder: hence the lasting quality of this color. The vermilion must also have been of the best quality, judging by its freshness as contrasted with the black. Measures 4 3/4" x 6 1/2" Tape residue and staining at bottom Check out my other items. As I will consolidate shipping.
